Performance Engineering Manager - Onsite
Position Overview:
GM Performance Power Units is seeking a forward-thinking and results-driven Performance Engineering Manager to lead the performance development function of our Formula 1 power unit (PU) program. This role is instrumental in maximizing the competitive performance of the PU through advanced modeling, data analysis, and real-time support. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in F1 or top-tier motorsport environments, combining technical expertise with strong leadership skills to guide a high-performance engineering team. You will work collaboratively across ICE, ERS, controls, and trackside groups to deliver performance excellence across the full race calendar.
Key Responsibilities:
• Lead the Performance Engineering group responsible for simulation, performance modeling, calibration strategy, and real-time data analysis of the F1 power unit.
• Own the definition and tracking of performance targets, including power output, fuel efficiency, energy recovery, and deployment strategies.
• Drive the development and validation of performance tools, including 1D, 3D and real-time simulation models (GT-Power, MATLAB/Simulink, etc.).
• Collaborate with ICE, ERS, controls, and vehicle integration teams to ensure performance optimization across the full power unit system.
• Lead pre-event and post-event performance reviews, working closely with trackside operations and race engineers.
• Analyze on-track data and develop strategies to enhance competitiveness while ensuring power unit reliability.
• Represent the performance group in technical decision-making meetings, reporting findings and recommendations to executive and technical leadership.
• Mentor, develop, and grow a high-performing team of performance engineers.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Motorsport Engineering, or a related field.
• 8+ years of experience in powertrain or performance engineering within F1 or elite motorsports (e.g., WEC, IndyCar, Formula E).
• Proven leadership experience in a technical motorsport environment, with strong team management and cross-functional collaboration.
• In-depth knowledge of hybrid power units, ICE performance metrics, energy recovery systems, and fuel strategies.
• Strong data analysis skills using MATLAB, Simulink, ATLAS, MoTeC, or similar tools.
• Working knowledge of Siemens NX, GT Power, and other 1D and 3D simulation Tools
• Hands-on experience with race strategy, deployment optimization, and powertrain calibration.
• Ability to work under pressure, adapt to rapid change, and deliver high-quality technical outcomes in fast-paced environments.
• International travel may be required to support project needs and to collaborate with global teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with current or next-generation F1 power units under 2026 FIA regulations.
• Familiarity with hybrid system integration and performance trade-offs between ICE and ERS components.
• Knowledge of telemetry systems, F1 technical working groups, and sporting regulations.
• Advanced simulation experience (real-time models, hardware-in-the-loop environments).
• Strong communication and leadership skills, with a collaborative and agile mindset.
