Position Description

Pay Grade: Coordinator 10

The Fire Academy Coordinator facilitates and oversees all aspects of WTCC Fire Academies and partnership Fire Academies under the supervision of the WTCC OSFM School Director.

Responsibilities and Duties (*Essential Functions)

*Plans, coordinates, and evaluates NC Fire & Rescue Commission (NCFRC) Firefighter I & II certification programs

*Serves as Lead Fire Academy and Certification Coordinator/Instructor for all Firefighter Certification professional development courses delivered by the
Fire Services Department

*Acts as Assistant Fire Services Director and NCFRC School Director, ensuring compliance with all certification course delivery requirements, both on- and off-site

*Recruits, hires, supervises and schedules adjunct instructors for Fire Academy and certification programs

*Serves as the Primary Safety Officer at the Fire Training Center

*Develops and manages day-to-day operations of reality-based and in-service training at the WTCC Fire Training Center, including instructor records,
student registrations, rosters, and reports

Provides instruction and instructional support as needed

Manages contract entry for classes and adjunct instructors

Maintains and updates instructor files to ensure compliance with credentialing standards

Organizes, coordinates, and oversees daily operations of reality-based training environments, including: Fire Training Center Live Fire Lab Facility; High Rise Technical Rescue Lab Clean Tower; Driver Operator Training Station; HazMat Prop Areas

Manages instructors and coordinators delivering fire/rescue certification and in-service specialized training

Conducts inspections and maintenance of live fire, technical rescue, and driver operator props

Ensures training environments and equipment are safe and operational; processes repair and replacement requests

Maintains inventory of all fire/rescue equipment assigned to the facility

Coordinates and maintains all course records and documentation for reality-based and in-service courses

Collaborates with internal auditors to ensure program compliance with NCCCS and NCFRC rules

Maintains emergency plans for supply access and treatment of injuries sustained during training

Conducts periodic inspections of lab equipment to ensure functionality and safety compliance

Maintains liaison with fire/rescue professional organizations regarding training programs, operations, and needs

Stays current with technological advances in reality-based training

Attends trade shows, conferences, and seminars to enhance program quality

Reviews and enforces safety protocols for all training environments

Research, designs, and updates training programs as needed

Submits new courses for course code approval

Ensures all course deliveries comply with NCFRC procedures and standards

Oversees staff assisting in course planning, development, presentation, and administration

Participates in marketing efforts, student recruitment, and presentations to external stakeholders

Assists in the coordination, visitation, and evaluation of fire/rescue continuing education classes and other assigned duties to support quality program delivery

Plans, schedules, and coordinates Fire Academy graduation ceremonies

Works flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to meet the needs of customer agencies

Maintains inventory of WTCC Fire Training Center equipment and ensures timely renewal of equipment warranties

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Able to use a wide variety of teaching methods to promote learning

Innovative, creative, motivated and work well with others

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationship with students, peers, supervisors and staff

Able to maintain records accurately and be able to meet deadlines consistently

Working knowledge of Learning Management Systems

Able to perform normal duties with minimum supervision

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrates resourcefulness, initiative, enthusiasm, and a sincere interest in helping students reach their maximum potential

Minimum Requirements

NCFRC Level II Instructor

Qualified as NCFRC Firefighter I & II Instructor

7 years work experience as a full-time firefighter

5 years experience teaching FF certification courses for a community college

Preferences

7 years documented time delivering FF I & II Certification Instruction

3 to 5 years serving in the capacity of a Fire Academy Coordinator or as a Fire Academy Lead Instructor
