The Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the heart of historic Portsmouth.
The Role
They are looking to appoint a full-time, term-time Library Assistant to join their Library team from September 2025. Their Library Assistant will be responsible for supporting the successful day-to-day operation of all the librarys functions and spaces, which are widely used by the whole school community. There will be the opportunity to support pupils with developing their wider research-orientated study skills, including supporting them in the production of independent research projects. There will also be opportunities to work collaboratively with the Pre-School and Junior School libraries and assist with events to welcome younger pupils into the Senior School libraires. This is a full-time, term-time position to include attendance at all Professional Development Days (INSET) in the school calendar. During school terms the hours of work will be 37.5 per week, Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm with an unpaid 30 minutes for lunch each day.
Main Responsibilities
Support the efficient and effective operation of the Library, working in close liaison with the other members of the Department
Responsibility for the management of library spaces, including pupil private study, IT facilities and rotating displays
To welcome pupils and staff to the enquiry desk and offer an efficient and friendly service, to include: Issue and return of the librarys stock
Shelving and keeping the library tidy and well presented
Adding and withdrawing stock under the direction of the Librarian
Managing and maintaining library supplies
Processing new materials
Managing periodicals
Keeping booklists updated
Encourage and enable all library users to develop their love of reading
Assist with library club activities
Guide pupils to relevant resources and encourage their use of the library
Attend, and complete, all relevant training including safeguarding, data protection and health and safety, as required by the school
The Ideal Candidate
A good standard of education, with excellent spoken and written English (essential)
Experience of working in a team (essential)
Experience of a customer facing role, preferably within an education or professional services environment (essential)
A qualification in librarianship (desirable)
Experience of working or volunteering in a library setting (desirable)
Enthusiastic about working with young people and keen to share their knowledge and love of reading and literature
The ability to share knowledge and a love of reading and to help pupils develop effective study skills and research techniques
The ability to work in a team and to become involved in the life of the school
Able to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children and young people
