Job Description

The Environment Agency is committed to inclusivity and equal opportunities, offering flexible work arrangements for all vacancies. Join us in a diverse environment where every voice is heard and valued.

Do you want to effectively regulate the energy sectors to create a better place? The UK’s strategy to deliver Net Zero is driving a transformation in the energy sectors, which are responsible for 24% of UK Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. They need to fully decarbonise by 2050 while doubling electricity production. Concerns about energy security provide additional pressures to quickly transition to new sustainable sources of power, whilst maximising domestic sources of energy.

Through effective regulation, we must ensure that energy sectors protect people and the environment from emissions, and mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

We’re recruiting a fixed-term role, up to 2 years, for somebody with experience of working in or regulating energy sectors, including combustion plants, waste incineration and refineries. (further information in the additional information document).

You’ll need to:

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training
* Develop strategy for our sectors and produce the tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes
* Commission and manage external research projects where needed
* Work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be asked to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.

The Energy & COMAH team is part of Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation of Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate.

Our technical experts lead on the definition of standards for our sectors, providing:

* Strategic direction, and tools in support regulation of the energy sectors
* Guidance and training to deliver new duties
* Environmental best practice

In your capability-based answers please demonstrate your:

* Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work
* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, and experience of the work area for the role in question, gained either by working within and/or regulating relevant processes. This will include knowledge of control measures for emissions to air where relevant
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia
* Work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals

Applications will be “blind” assessed using your answers to the competency questions. Feedback is generally not available at the application stage.

For questions relating to this role, please contact Emma Preston or Charlotte Sholl at combustion@environment-agency.gov.uk.

This vacancy closes end of October. Interviews are expected to be held in person in Birmingham by the end of November. It would be anticipated that this role would require some travel. If you consent to be recruited onto a reserve list, we’ll hold your details for 6 months and we may offer you an alternative post.

Length of contract: Up to 2 years.
