We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Photography Teacher to join our outstanding Photography team. This role is ideal for a qualified educator with a passion for photography and learner development within a dynamic further education environment.
The is a permanent, part-time role (21 hours per week), based at our City Campus Manchester.
You will be joining a highly experienced and commercially focused photography department with a vast range of industry knowledge across commercial photography, studio practice, creative image-making, and visual media. The team brings extensive industry-based experience and strong connections to the wider world of photography, providing learners with valuable insight into current professional practice, industry expectations, and progression opportunities.
As a UAL Awarding Body qualification provider, experience and understanding of UAL programmes and assessment requirements are essential to this role. The successful candidate will be confident delivering creative education within UAL frameworks and supporting learners to achieve high standards in both practical and contextual work.
The department is committed to delivering an inspiring and industry-relevant learning experience that supports learners in developing both creative and technical skills. Department projects include Greater Mancunian, a long-standing live brief explored by learners and the teaching team, encouraging creative investigation of identity, place, community, and contemporary culture through photography and visual storytelling.
The role will involve teaching, assessment, tutorial support, curriculum development, and contribution to departmental activities and enrichment.
You will deliver high-quality teaching across photography programmes while ensuring standards are met in line with awarding body requirements.

At The Manchester College, you will be supported by our Teaching Academy to work towards qualified teacher status for post 16 compulsory education, through a Cert Ed/PGCE. This includes 3-4 hours delivery per week and engagement with a mentor to support your progress in the profession while you work. The starting salary for an unqualified teacher is between £30,750 – £32,931*. It’s a great way to kick-start a rewarding career with full training and support. Once you’ve successfully qualified and demonstrated your teaching competence, you’ll progress to the qualified teacher salary banding.
*Consideration will be given to relevant industry experience and skills with the flexibility to offer increased starting salaries in some circumstances*.

Key Responsibilities
7. Deliver engaging teaching, learning, and assessment in Photography.
8. Prepare learners for assessments and projects aligned to UAL awarding body specifications.
9. Assess student work and provide constructive feedback in line with UAL standards.
10. Support learners in developing practical skills in areas such as camera techniques, studio practice, lighting, editing, darkroom processes, and visual storytelling.
11. Deliver teaching across both traditional and digital photographic practices.
12. Support learners in using professional photographic studios, lighting equipment, and darkroom facilities safely and effectively.
13. Contribute to course and curriculum development activities.
14. Support and contribute to department-led projects, exhibitions, and live briefs including Greater Mancunian.
15. Monitor learner progress and provide appropriate academic support.
16. Maintain accurate records in line with college and awarding body requirements.
17. Work collaboratively with the wider department to maintain high-quality provision.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
To be successful in this role, you will need to:
18. Certificate of education or PGCE.
19. Current and valid industry specialism.
20. Assessor qualifications (if required by Awarding Organisation).
21. Minimum Level 3 occupational qualification.
22. English and maths minimum level 2 Grace C or grade 4 and above.
23. Proven experience teaching Photography.
24. Experience delivering and assessing UAL Awarding Body programmes.
25. Strong understanding of UAL assessment processes and quality requirements.
26. Strong subject knowledge in photographic practice, including digital photography, studio techniques, image editing, darkroom processes, and creative development.
27. Experience working within professional photographic studios and darkroom environments.
28. Experience assessing student work and supporting learner achievement.
29. Excellent communication, organisation, and classroom management skills.
30. Recent industry experience within Photography or related creative sectors (desirable).
31. Experience contributing to curriculum or course development (desirable).
