The Deaf Independence, Derby (DID) team is part of the Derby City Council’s Deaf Service. If you • have experience of working in the community with Deaf people who have learning disabilities, neurodiversity or mental health needs • can adapt your fluent British Sign Language (BSL) to communicate with people who have more limited language • and are committed to supporting Deaf people to maximise their independence this Enablement Support Worker role may be the right one for you. This is a rare opportunity to join our team of both deaf and hearing colleagues, who are based in open plan offices in the Council House, although this role is mainly supporting customer in their homes and in the community. Being independently mobile is therefore essential. The role will require occasional planned evening and Saturday working. The Opportunity In the role of Enablement Support worker with here’s an example of what you’ll be doing to make an impact: You will work with deaf people to achieve their goals. This could be • short term involvement to develop skills such as building their confidence with budgeting or to travel independently • long-term involvement enabling a deaf adult with a learning disability to gradually develop safe cooking skills, manage their money and maintain contact with their family. • working alongside mental health colleagues to support someone’s mental wellbeing and help them manage their medication. You will be working independently but have regular opportunities to meet with your team, and develop your skills through training opportunities, peer support, regular supervision and team meetings. About You To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally have... • Excellent British Sign Language skills and the ability to adapt your communication when working with people whose language and communication is less well developed • Experience of working with deaf and/ or deafblind people with a range of support needs • Ability to work with individuals and groups to maximise independence, well-being and access to the community • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, remaining motivated and person centred • Ability to cope with demanding and stressful situations and behaviour that challenges • Commitment to providing a professional, high quality, confidential service • Ability to follow support plans, rotas and instructions • Ability to clearly and accurately record your work in the person’s home and on electronic records • Ability to work flexibly, adapting to the needs of the people supported by the team Who We Are
