Ward and Role Details
Gate 42 is a busy mixed elderly medical ward and neck of femur fracture ward. The unit takes direct admissions from the Emergency Department or from Gate 41 (our assessment area). We aim to provide high quality care to all our patients and ensure a safe and caring staff experience. We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate individual to join our existing Band 6 team on Gate 42 at Pinderfields Hospital. The successful candidate will work clinically and provide clinical leadership in decision making with support from the ward manager to ensure patient safety. A preference is given to candidates with Orthopaedic/NOF experience.
The role involves maximizing patient flow to admit patients from the emergency department and delivering high quality patient-centred care on the ward.
Main responsibilities
* Strive for continuous improvements in the delivery of high quality patient-focused care.
* Participate within the ward team and delegate work on a day-to-day basis for junior staff.
* Organise own workload and support junior staff to time manage and prioritise.
* Plan and manage skill mix to reflect workload and patient needs, including using the e-rostering system effectively.
* Identify areas of conflict and assist in its management to promote a healthy working environment.
* In the absence of the Ward Manager, maintain staff records (sickness, annual leave) and take appropriate action where necessary.
* Assist in the orientation/induction of new staff, nursing students, allied health professionals and medical staff.
* Mentor and supervise pre- and post-registered staff; demonstrate procedures and promote high standards of nursing care.
* Ensure nursing practices comply with Trust policies and procedures and are maintained to the highest standard.
* Assist the senior sister/charge nurse in responding to and investigating complaints and incidents to improve evidence-based practice.
* Respond to patient, relatives and carer concerns and take appropriate action.
* Maintain a safe clinical environment through risk management, audits, risk assessment, incident management and investigation.
* Maintain awareness of national and regional initiatives and participate in staff performance review processes.
* Foster good relationships to maintain high morale for staff and patients.
* Provide feedback on individual staff progression and document concerns as required.
Essential Person Specification
* Qualifications: NMC registration, Registered Nurse, evidence of ongoing professional development, evidence of competency in teaching and assessing
* Experience: Post-registered experience; management and leadership training desirable; Orthopaedic/NOF experience desirable
* Knowledge and Awareness: Up-to-date knowledge of nursing issues, demonstrated innovation in practice and awareness of professional responsibilities
* Skills: Prioritise tasks, excellent clinical and leadership skills, ability to motivate self and others, and strong organisational and communication skills
