Would you like to be involved in developing an innovative CBT service delivering support directly to the school environment?

In line with the government’s priority to increase access and availability of mental health and wellbeing support for children and young people, the Newham Mental Health Support Team (Wellbeing In Newham Schools Team) is an exciting opportunity to deliver evidence-based early interventions for children and young people, working across both educational settings and healthcare sectors in England.

We are looking for confident CAMHS professionals with experience delivering CBT based interventions who are keen to develop their skills in providing evidence based interventions to children, young people and parents both within schools and in CAMHS clinic setting. You will have a demonstrable track record of providing collaborative and supportive interventions with children, young people and parents/carers. You will have professional registration within your chosen profession, for example CWP or EMHP, with practical experience post-qualification. The community served is multi-ethnic and culturally diverse and we welcome applicants who are skilled at working with the richness and complexity of this multicultural context.

Main duties of the job

In addition to the applicants CYP mental health expertise the post holder will be expected to contribute to CPD of the trainee education mental health practitioners (EMHPs), supervision of junior staff, contribution to community development and attendance at education forums such as SENCO and DSL forums. The post holder will require a high degree of professional autonomy and self-management and will be required to account for their professional practice through appraisal and audit.

Person specification

Education/ Qualification/ Training

Essential criteria

1. CAMHS Specialist/ Senior CWP or EMHP/ CYP IAPT recruit to train candidates Qualification in CWP/EMHP or equivalent field
2. Appropriate level of qualification for your profession e.g. PG Diploma, BSc, Masters
3. Registration with your appropriate body where applicable (e.g. BACP, BPS, etc.)

Desirable criteria

4. Evidence of continuous and relevant professional training and development (CPD), as appropriate with qualification period
5. Post Grad training or experience to support the needs of diverse children, young people and their families
6. Mentor/Practice educator qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

7. Experience delivering CBT based low intensity, short term interventions for low mood and anxiety
8. Experience in working with children and young people with mild to moderate emotional and behavioural needs.
9. Previous experience of working in CAMHS, education or community organisation with a focus on social emotional and mental health needs
10. Experience of working with families, school and other partner organisation to support young people who may be displaying behaviours that challenge.
11. Experience of delivering evidence based Parent groups and psychoeducation groups.
12. Experience of risk assessment and risk management

Desirable criteria

13. Experience of supervising junior staff members
14. Experience of working with a wide range of social, emotional, behavioural and mental health needs.
15. Experience of working with children, young people and families in emotional crisis.
16. Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary context
17. Experience, skills and flexibility to contribute to and facilitate effective working within a multi-disciplinary team setting
18. Experience of care planning
19. Experience of working in a culturally diverse Inner city area including working with interpreters and awareness of the impact of race and ethnicity on a CYP experience.
20. Experience of working in a specialist or alternative school or education setting
21. Experience of supporting schools to develop a whole school approach to resilience or through trauma informed practices
22. Experience in participation and co-production

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

23. Evidence of early intervention skills and knowledge in children, young people and family mental health
24. Ability to deliver evidence based intervention for CYP, parents/carers
25. Experience of delivering group interventions and psychoeducation in person and virtually.
26. Able to manage own time and Caseload
27. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
28. Presentation/teaching skills
29. Experience of therapy modalities suited to children, young people and their families
30. A working knowledge of Child Protection Guidelines

Desirable criteria

31. Able to work effectively across organisational boundaries
32. Basic computer skills: Outlook, word, excel, powerpoint, MSTeams, Zoom and patient records
33. Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with others. Ability to recognise own limits and seek support re supervision as appropriate.
34. The ability to empathise in a complex sensitive or emotional environment. Sensitivity to deal with distress, and aggression
35. Specialist clinical skills within specific therapeutic modalities
36. Knowledge, understanding and experience with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and families with a high level of deprivation
37. A broad appreciation of the contribution of other therapeutic disciplines to a multi-agency service Experience, skills and ability to liaise effectively with other agencies and professionals
38. Knowledge of current development in children and young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing.

40. Ability and willingness to work outside office hours when required by the role to suit pupils
41. Freedom to act: Physical effort: Confined sitting position (therapy); travelling within community.
42. Mental effort: writing reports; planning teaching; concentrating for therapy sessions /clinical Supervision; managing pupil distress. Balancing the demands of being a clinician in a schools environment.
43. Emotional effort: Dealing with families in breakdown; experiencing trauma and abuse; occasional patient complaints; conveying of unwelcome news
44. Working conditions: Occasional verbal and physical abuse; unpredictable clinical scenarios eg. Distressed young people and their families; travel in community all weathers; based on different sites on different days.
45. Working flexibly: This post will function across different education settings, CAMHS clinic and work from home and deliver virtually
