Senior Research Technician (110776-0825)
Fixed Term Contract and Full Time | 1.0 FTE / 36.5 hours per week | Funding for up to 12 months | Expected start date: 1st October 2025
Howard Dalton Centre funded project: Deconstructing energised associations that build and maintain the Gram-negative Bacterial Cell Envelope
What scientific question will you investigate?
You will join the Webby group in the School of Life Sciences at Warwick University. We are a diverse group of interdisciplinary scientists who investigate the molecular mechanisms that underpin cell envelope maintenance in Gram-negative bacteria. Our research focuses on understanding how protein complexes assemble and cooperate to preserve the three-layered cell envelope structure, a process that is essential for bacterial survival. This work has broad implications for our understanding of bacterial physiology and the identification of novel therapeutic targets.
As part of the team, you will support research by providing technical assistance across a wide range of experimental areas, including molecular biology, bacterial microbiology, and protein expression and purification. Your work will span multiple projects and contribute to downstream biochemical and biophysical analyses. You will collaborate closely with postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and external partners, including structural biologists, microbiologists, and biochemists.
In addition, you will help ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the lab. This will include responsibilities such as training new lab members, maintaining inventories, ordering consumables, and ensuring the group remains compliant with relevant health and safety regulations.
About The Research Group

We are based at the Gibbet Hill Campus, a vibrant research environment within the University of Warwick. Our lab has direct access to media preparation facilities, cryo-EM infrastructure, fluorescence imaging microscopes, and a wide network of researchers in cell envelope biology, microbiology, and structural biology. The University offers opportunities for professional development including regular opportunities to attend international conferences.
KEYWORDS: Gram-negative bacteria, antimicrobial resistance, bacterial microbiology, molecular biology, protein expression and purification, lab management.
About You
We are looking for a candidate with expertise in molecular biology techniques, including cloning, mutagenesis, and expression screening, as well as protein purification of both soluble and membrane proteins using affinity and size-exclusion chromatography. We also welcome applications from individuals with a strong background in microbiology, particularly those experienced in sterile technique and bacterial cell culture. Applicants should hold a laboratory-based research Master’s degree (or equivalent hands-on experience) in biochemistry, biological sciences, or a related field. Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude are essential. You should be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team. For further information regarding the skills required for this role please see the personal specification section of the attached job description.
