Our marine business is offering an excellent opportunity for a Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (depending on experience) to join the RAS/FAS Value Stream team at our offices in Gateshead, UK.

This role will work as part of a multidisciplinary team producing designs for equipment associated with specialist Naval deck machinery, including Replenishment At Sea (RAS) equipment, winches, reelers, and cranes. The position involves whole life technical involvement from interpretation of customer requirements during tendering, through concept development, detailed design, manufacturing support, testing, and installation onboard naval vessels. You will also be responsible for identifying and undertaking R&D and improvement activities to keep our product at the cutting edge of Naval technology.
Key responsibilities and job tasks
* Lead the technical delivery of projects overseeing a multi-disciplinary team.
* Develop Mechanical Engineering solutions that fulfill client requirements, from requirements capture, through concept design, to product development, commissioning, and in-service support.
* Identify and develop R&D and Continuous Improvement opportunities.
* Investigate safety and technical problems using structured problem-solving techniques.
* Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
* Provide technical reference/guidance to equipment suppliers, internal departments, and customers. Approve/witness factory tests and inspections at supplier’s works.
* Manage supplier interfaces and provide technical assistance/approval to suppliers.
* Check the technical work of others and provide guidance to colleagues, suppliers, and customers.
* Create technical design appraisal documents for submission to marine classification societies.
* Manage requirements, risks, assumptions, interfaces, and issues during all design phases.
Qualification and experience requirements
* BEng in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
* Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership with IMECHE or relevant institute.
* Engineering experience relevant to this role.
* Experience in a highly regulated industry.
* Preferred experience in marine or offshore oil and gas industries.
* Proven track record in leading technical project delivery to quality, cost, and schedule.
* Experience in concept, product development, and in-service (ILS) support.
* Experience creating equipment assembly arrangements and Engineering Bills of Materials using ERP/MRP systems.
* Assessment of designs for code compliance, using hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
* Production of technical specifications, test procedures, and manuals for marine mechanical systems.
* Experience with 2D and 3D CAD systems like AutoCAD and Creo.
* Proficient in MS Office suite.
* Familiar with BS EN 8888 and BS EN 22553 standards for drawings.
* Self-motivated with good communication skills, capable of working in a controlled documentation environment.
Additional requirements
Successful candidates will need to attain UK BPSS or SC Clearance for contracts involving the UK Ministry of Defence.
