Job overview
This post is for one substantive Consultant Medical Microbiologist in the Department of Medical Microbiology in Barking Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust. This is a new post. The appointee will, together with consultant microbiologist colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective clinical microbiology, virology, and infection prevention & control service to the Trust, local General Practitioners, and other users of the service including PHE.
The successful candidate will hold a contract for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week plus 1 PA for the Microbiology on-call commitments.
Main duties of the job
CONSULTANT MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY or JOINT INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND MICROBIOLOGY (10 PAs)
The post attracts 10 programmed activities, and the appointee will be expected to participate in the on-call duties which are currently a one-in-five rota. In addition to general clinical microbiology duties, the appointee will be the Lead for Antimicrobial Stewardship and will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring BHRUT’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme supported by the Senior Antimicrobial Pharmacist and Microbiology colleagues.
Consultant offices are based on site at Queen’s Hospital, but clinical responsibilities mean rotating through both acute sites of Queen’s Hospital and King George Hospital where we have on-site laboratories, and appointees will be expected to take an active interest in these facilities.
Any candidate who is unable to work full-time for personal reasons will be eligible for consideration for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust, in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Working for our organisation
We’re an organisation that is getting better and better, and our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and our patients are happy with. We’re no longer in; we’ve opened at our Elective Surgical Hub in King George Hospital (KGH); and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, was named by the Health Service Journal in 2024.
We operate from two main sites – KGH in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two busy emergency departments with more than 330,000 people visiting them last year. We’re campaigning to secure the £35m we need to and get rid of corridor care.
Our patients are benefitting from our services in Ilford, Hornchurch, and Community Diagnostic Centres (CDC) at and in Hornchurch.
These CDCs are open 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, and are providing an extra 94,000 scans a year.
The majority of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries – live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and are from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic groups. Many can and more than 400 of them are on our Ofsted-accredited programs. We’re proud to be an employer.
We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record that will be transformative for our staff and beneficial for our patients.
