Overview
The Platform Manager role is a 36.5 hour per week position. The University is creating a centralised nano/micro fabrication facility, the Nanofabrication Research Technology Platform ("Facility"). The Platform Manager will develop, implement and manage staff, resources and facilities to ensure the Platform becomes world-leading and meets legal, performance and welfare standards in all services delivered, enabling nanofabrication research across the University.
The Platform Manager will steward bespoke technology platforms and equipment valued at approximately £5 million, ensuring the facility delivers internationally competitive nano and microfabrication resources for the university research community. The role involves implementing and advising on service delivery and experimental design for current and prospective users, including university staff and academic collaborations.
Responsibilities
* Lead a technicians’ team within a busy department; manage a varied workload with flexibility and organization.
* Develop, implement and manage staff, resources and facilities to meet performance, welfare, and legal requirements.
* Oversee stewardship of bespoke technology platforms and associated equipment worth ~£5 million.
* Implement and advise on service delivery and experimental design for current and prospective users (university staff and collaborations).
* Manage the annual budget for the Research Technology Platform, including facility running costs, procurement, maintenance costs and income generation; provide financial estimates for experimental and research work with annual turnover reporting.
* Demonstrate strong technical expertise in nano/microfabrication processing (e.g., lithography, metal deposition, oxide deposition, wet chemical processing, plasma etching).
* Maintain a strong health and safety focus and ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
* Build effective relationships with internal and external users and demonstrate skills transfer to others.
* Interpret complex instructions, analyze and implement detailed specifications; work on your own initiative and coordinate multiple projects.
Qualifications / Skills
* Significant experience with specialist scientific facilities and tools related to physics, engineering, chemistry or materials science; desirable experience in a semiconductor laboratory environment for high-purity materials.
* Experience in cleanroom operations and/or semiconductor device fabrication preferred.
* Strong background in design and technical diagrams, plus knowledge of health and safety legislation.
* Ability to build relationships with users and customers and transfer skills to others.
* Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently and manage a small team or multiple projects.
* Strong capability to interpret complex instructions and implement detailed specifications.
