Description
The job itself
We are seeking an Assistant Head to join our dedicated, enthusiastic and proactive School Leadership Team from September 2026. Initially, we are looking to appoint someone to take leadership responsibility for our Upper school provision across key stages 3-5. The role will require 1 day of teaching commitment, predominantly within the senior department but you must be able to work across the whole school if required. The appointed person will also be the Health and Safety officer for the school and residence, however all necessary training will be provided.
Kings Mill School and Residence is a local authority maintained Special School of approximately 136 pupils aged 2-19 years old, serving the needs of families across a wide area of the East Riding of Yorkshire and beyond.
All our students have either complex medical needs, profound and multiple learning difficulties or autism spectrum conditions. Our dedicated and talented staff are exceptional in managing their needs and developing their potential. Students are day-attendees and there is a Local Authority residential unit attached to the school, providing regular respite care for some of our students and which is an integral part of the school’s organisation.
Holding the appropriate Teaching Qualifications, you will be a role model for all staff, so to apply you must have: worked across a range of teaching ages, had leadership and management experience and developed a whole school subject area, had proven experience of managing teaching and support staff, and significant experience of teaching pupils with SEND and/or PMLD. As part of the leadership team you will be leading on school development and monitoring teaching and learning.
Your knowledge of Special School Curricula, framework and legislation will be up to date. You will have worked effectively with multi-disciplinary agencies and safeguarding partnerships. Your communication skills will be first class as you will need to communicate in different forms and with many different stakeholders, both externally and internally. Your ability to stay calm, plan and prioritise under pressure will be paramount.
In return we offer you the chance to join a well-respected school in the heart of the local community. You will get to work in a welcoming environment with inspiring children and young people and be part of a friendly, skilled and passionate team that is well supported by our committed board of governors. If you are ready for a new challenge and to take the next step on your career path, we would love to hear from you.
Informal visits are encouraged and can be arranged by prior appointment.
The school and residence are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all its staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a self-declaration of their criminal record or information that would make them unsuitable to work with children. In addition, an online search will be conducted.
You must be able to explain any gaps in your employment/education history and you must have a legal right to work in the UK. Appointments will be subject to satisfactory disclosure checks at enhanced level by the Disclosure and Barring Service as well as other background checks including professional references.
We comply with all the principles of safer recruitment as outlined in the DfE document Keeping Children Safe in Education.
Further information about our commitment to safeguarding can be found in our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy, available in the policies section of our website
