Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and technically capable Lead Mechanical Technician (LMech) to oversee the safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of planned preventative and reactive maintenance within a critical environment.
This is a hands-on supervisory role, combining leadership responsibility with active involvement in day-to-day engineering operations. The successful candidate will lead on-site mechanical activities, supervise internal technicians and specialist subcontractors, participate in a shift rota, and support site leadership in maintaining high standards of safety, reliability, and technical performance across all mechanical systems.
Key Responsibilities
* Operational Leadership
o Act as Deputy to the Technical Services Supervisor (TSS) when required
o Participate in emergency escalation procedures and provide out-of-hours technical support
o Ensure strict compliance with Safe Systems of Work, including RAMS, LOTO, and Permit-to-Work processes
o Maintain required site certifications and operate as an Authorised Person (AP) where appointed
o Lead by example, promoting a strong culture of safety, professionalism, and technical excellence
* Maintenance & Engineering
o Oversee and carry out routine, reactive, and emergency maintenance across mechanical and critical infrastructure systems
o Diagnose, rectify, and escalate mechanical faults to minimise operational impact
o Coordinate maintenance activities with the Helpdesk/DigiHub and liaise with end users to ensure timely access
o Ensure all self-delivered and subcontracted works meet engineering standards and industry best practice
o Support minor projects, plant upgrades, and asset replacement activities
* Team & Stakeholder Management
o Allocate internal and subcontractor resources effectively to meet service levels and operational deadlines
o Foster a team culture focused on safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement
o Build strong working relationships with clients, engineers, and external suppliers
o Mentor technicians and apprentices, supporting skills development and performance improvement
* Reporting & Compliance
o Provide regular operational updates to the Technical Services Supervisor, highlighting progress, risks, and resource requirements
o Ensure all maintenance activities are accurately recorded within the CMMS
o Maintain full compliance with statutory regulations, site procedures, and internal engineering standards
o Complete mandatory training and ensure technical competencies remain current
Required Qualifications & Experience
* Education & Training
o NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
o Authorised Person (AP) certification (desirable)
* Experience
o Minimum 5 years’ hands-on experience in mechanical maintenance
o Experience within a critical or high-reliability environment (highly desirable)
* Technical Skills
o Strong fault-finding and diagnostic capability across mechanical systems
o Sound knowledge of engineering standards, statutory compliance, and industry best practice
* IT & Systems
o Competent with Microsoft Office applications
o Experience using CMMS platforms for asset management and task tracking
