The role:
The role of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Pharmacy Services is to:
1. Ensure that patients derive maximum benefit and minimum harm from their medicines
2. Provide a single system approach to pharmacy and prescribing policy issues, including integration of systems within pharmacy and prescribing support functions
3. Support clinicians in their provision of high quality, effective and efficient pharmaceutical care to individual patients at whatever their point of need in their healthcare journey
4. Provide prescribers and managers with high quality, timeous information, analysis and advice to assist them to deliver effective prescribing management
5. Ensure that medicines are purchased, stored, dispensed and prescribed as cost effectively as possible

Key responsibilities:
General Responsibilities
6. Supporting medicines use reviews, evaluations, audits and research within multidisciplinary teams.
7. Identifying, managing and escalating risks related to medicines use and administration.
8. Ensuring compliance with all statutory and professional requirements (Health & Safety, COSHH, Medicines Act, Misuse of Drugs Act, GPhC Code of Ethics).
9. Maintaining security and appropriate storage of medicines, including key and alarm system management.
10. Monitoring safe handling of medicines across wards, clinics and departments.
11. Participating in formulary monitoring, new drug requests and adherence to national/local guidance.
12. Completing routine drug checks (e.g., controlled drugs).
13. Prioritising workload and contributing to service development and redesign.
14. Maintaining broad knowledge of pharmacy operations including dispensing, distribution and IV preparation.
15. Undertaking CPD, participating in training programmes, and conducting PDP/ turas reviews.
16. Supervising and supporting the development of pharmacy students, trainees, technicians, and other healthcare staff.
17. Deputising for senior staff when required and participating in weekend, extended hours, public holiday and oncall rotas.
Clinical Pharmacy Practice
18. Ensuring safe, effective and costefficient prescribing and administration of medicines.
19. Using triage referral guidance to deliver pharmaceutical care.
20. Documenting and acting on pharmaceutical care issues, including drug histories, care plans and monitoring of clinical parameters.
21. Screening discharge prescriptions for clinical appropriateness.
22. Participating in ward rounds and multidisciplinary meetings.
23. Providing advice to prescribers, healthcare professionals and patients on drug choice, dosing, interactions, side effects and therapeutic drug monitoring.
24. Supporting continuity of care between hospital and primary care.
25. Identifying and managing clinical governance issues related to medicines.
26. Supporting formulary management, selfmedication schemes, discharge planning and patient education.
27. Monitoring medicines usage and liaising with senior pharmacists.
28. Taking professional responsibility for accurate, legal prescribing within defined areas.
29. After training, practising as a nonmedical prescriber within agreed frameworks.
30. Participating in clinical trials where appropriate.
Education, Training, Audit & Research
31. Supervising and training pharmacy staff, students, trainees and other healthcare professionals.
32. Providing education to medical, nursing and pharmacy staff on safe and costeffective prescribing.
33. Educating patients and carers on safe and effective medicines use.
34. Acting as tutor for vocational training and preregistration pharmacists.
35. Participating in the implementation and evaluation of local and national guidelines.
36. Contributing to multidisciplinary and pharmacyled research and audit.
37. Participating in clinical trials as required.
