Our Emergency Department is part of a major trauma centre network in the South West. We value multidisciplinary collaboration and continuous learning through our Practice Development Nurse and specialist colleagues.
Responsibilities
* Organise and participate in the delivery of high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
* Take personal responsibility to follow Trust and local policies and procedures and provide care in line with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
* Assess, plan, provide, maintain and evaluate patient care.
* Supervise and guide other staff including healthcare support workers and students on a daily basis.
* Act as a mentor/assessor for learners (e.g., student nurses and support workers).
* Work within a clinical care team and contribute to a learning environment.
* Report significant changes in a patient’s condition to the multidisciplinary team and coordinate with relevant professionals for referrals as required.
* Responsible for ordering, administration and custody of patients’ medications according to Trust policies.
* Assist in coordinating discharge planning in partnership with the multidisciplinary team where relevant.
* Support admission, assessment and preparation of patients undergoing treatment or investigations.
* Escort patients to other wards or departments as required.
* Ensure patients are treated with courtesy, respect individual needs, and maintain confidentiality at all times.
* Liaise effectively with other disciplines or departments as appropriate; act in emergency situations and follow fire and resuscitation procedures; provide leadership to junior staff in such situations as per Trust policy.
* Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.
* Ensure readiness and availability of nursing supplies and equipment; report and document any broken or damaged equipment.
* Provide safe storage and disposal of hazardous substances; maintain sharps and waste disposal in line with policy.
* Monitor stock levels, assist with ward administration, and be aware of staffing requirements.
* Undertake ward administration tasks as agreed with ward/department management.
Person specification
Education/Training/Qualifications Essential: Registered Nurse with current live NMC registration; evidence of continuing professional development.
Work Experience Essential: Minimum of 12 months recent, post-registration experience in an acute environment (ward). Ward/department training such as IV administration, cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, male catheterisation. Desirable: Experience in an Emergency Department.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Essential: Advanced communication skills (verbal and written), ability to work as part of a team, basic IT skills (IHS, Acis, email); good knowledge of the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and current nursing issues.
