Technical Manager - Foundry Industry
Our client are expanding rapidly the team needs to grow with commensurate skills they need their next Technical Manager or Technical Process Manager. They will become future Technical leaders and will be trained and mentored by the current management team. The current team have significant experience and knowledge that would be beneficial to anyone with ambitions and aspirations to become the managers or directors of the future
Our client produce and manufacture castings both in volume and prototype this position would be ideal for someone who has a good understanding of foundry practices preferably Iron and Steel
Role Summary:
To minimise internal and external scrap
Support Quality department, maintain QC systems according to quality management
Support projects to improve yield of cast parts and increase margin
Support Magmasoft simulation as a strategic tool: implementation, coordination of Magmasoft activities
Coordinate metrology /3D scanning department/ virtual assemblies and support growth of individuals within the pattern-shop.
Lead root cause analysis investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions.
Ensure all testing processes and methods meet customer requirements
Adopt and maintain principle of standardisation in all processes
Adopt principles of continuous development of processes to optimise quality and productivity.
Optimise process control tools to enhance quality, reduce lead time, tooling and manufacturing costs.
Manage effectiveness of subordinates and team members
Maintain calibration of process control tools and production processes
Develop and maintain ‘right first time and everytime’ culture
Drive improvements in process control tools and coordinate databases to support correlation of scrap investigations and problem solving.
Reduce cost of manufacturing and eliminate re-working
Be a role model for the department to influence positive change
Mentor employees with potential and passion for learning
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
Employ improvements in safety, efficiency, utilisation and housekeeping.
Implement best practice solutions for process control tools which contribute to optimise yield and reduce non-value-added processing or activities (cutting, grinding, transporting etc)
Maintain processes and ownership of the technical programme.
Coordinate and manage requirement for test certificates for external testing
Establish and maintain testing protocols for new and existing products
Monitor and evaluate customer feedback and implement necessary actions to address any external quality concerns
Maintain all process controls tools to ensure calibration, training and performance is aligned to the quality system
Collaborate with supplier representatives to ensure the newest technology and consumables are being used to drive process and quality efficiency. Liaise and coordinate support through the network of with technical support engineers
Liaise with customers, machinists, sub-contract processors of VFL castings
To achieve agreed monthly business plan objectives.
Manage and maintain calibration checks for process control tools
Support transition from manual dressing to adopt auto-grinders

Maintain skills matrices and utilise to extend flexibility within team.
Manage and coordinate inventories of purchased materials in the sand and metallography labs
Liaise closely with sales function to expand markets for potential customer and applications
Assist customer visits and liaison and audits.
Ensure all machine, plant and equipment are maintained to meet specification and operational demands and optimum utilisation.
Convey and drive a culture of continuous improvement.
Recommend projects to improve performance and implement cost saving ideas
Visually manage all KPI’s.

Limits of Authority:
To authorise consumable items through purchase orders
To authorise all overtime for your team.
To authorise all holiday for the team.
All disciplinary action up to (but not including) dismissal for employees outside probation.
To authorise clock and hours for all operatives, team leaders and supervisors.
Task Analysis:
1. Labour
1.1 Discipline personnel in line with VFL HR policy and report action to the HR manager
1.2 Ensure personnel perform as required in the execution of their duties and job descriptions.
1.3 Ensure personnel are adequately trained to meet the needs of the organisation.
1.4 Ensure that all personnel in area of responsibility meet the requirements of the Company’s health and safety policy
1.5 Establish and maintain good employee relations
1.6 To develop and improve the skills and knowledge of all personnel in the department and to have regular performance reviews, appraisal or formalised feedback.
1.7 ensure back to work interviews are completed with HR manager for all subordinates
1.8 Plan daily workload of team
3. HEALTH AND SAFETY
3.1 Ensure that company health and safety policy in understood and upheld by your team.
3.2 Ensure that all personnel are equipped with the required PPE and safety equipment and are trained in its correct use. Ensuring that the equipment is properly looked after and maintained at all times
3.3 Supervise and control subcontractors on site ensuring VFL policy is implemented including review of method statements.
3.4 Ensure that all accidents and near misses are reported and recorded using appropriate documents/forms
3.5 Ensure appropriate permits to work are issued for all non-routine tasks.
3.6 Develop and actively improve risk assessments for key activities within departments.
3.7 Bring to the attention of the Directors any practice that you consider unsafe or illegal anywhere within the company.
4. ENVIRONMENTAL
4.1 Maintain and if possible, improve agreed environmental standards in respect of our operating permit.

Visually manage the following KPI’s and drive improvement.
Internal rejects 5% Scrap (% by value, % by Quantity, % by weight
External rejects 2% Scrap by value and Quantity
Reduce TEA as a ratio of part one resin for PUCB process >20%
Reduce core scrap >10%
Implement greensand testing database
