Offer description

As part of the Oxford Global Health Initiative (OGH, https://www.globalhealth.ox.ac.uk/), the Department of Biology at the University of Oxford is seeking two highly motivated and capable independent researchers to bring exciting new perspectives to the study of mycology at the University of Oxford within a dynamic new Department with a culture that values inclusivity, innovation, collegiality, and scholarship. These posts will be for five years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension depending on performance. The principal criterion is excellence in research, although potential to contribute to teaching, as well as to the wider aims of Department will be welcome. The Oxford Global Health (OGH) initiative, was created to galvanise Oxford’s strengths in global health research, bringing cohesion to the distributed community of Oxford scholars working in this area, transforming the visibility of Oxford Global Health externally, and championing key challenge areas for further investment. There is a core team working both externally and internally to support three initial university-wide challenge areas: (i) The Oxford Malaria ELIMINATE Partnership (OMEP); (ii) Invasive fungal diseases; and (iii) Climate change and child health. This post will contribute to area (ii) and will focus on fungal phytopathogens and food security, in collaboration within the Plant Molecular Biology Section of the Department (https://www.biology.ox.ac.uk/molecular-plant-biology).It is expected that the successful candidate will be committed to research aimed at the improvement of Global Health, including fundamental biology to unlock new approaches to fungal control. In addition to the contribution the OGH, this post will act to expand the research and teaching portfolio of the Department of Biology. The successful candidate will be located in the new £200M Life and Mind Building (LaMB) that is fully equipped with state -of-the-art facilities, including GM plant growth facilities and a dedicated DEFRA licensed laboratory. Within the broad area of fungal plant disease, the department is willing to consider applicants working on a wide range of pathogen/host systems and approaches. How to apply The University of Oxford is committed to equal opportunity, and to being a place where everyone belongs and is supported to succeed. We recognise how the diversity of our community enriches our ability to deliver on our academic mission. We welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds, including those under-represented within higher education. No applicant or members of staff shall be unlawfully discriminated against on the basis of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation. This post is full time (although applications to work part time will be considered). The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Wednesday 10th December 2025. Interviews are likely to be scheduled for late January. Applications for this vacancy are to be made online via our e-recruitment system, and you will be required to upload a covering letter explaining your interest in the post, a description of past research achievements, an outline of your research plans for the post, and a CV as part of your online application.
