Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Dietitian with an interest in cancer care to take on this exciting opportunity to lead the Macmillan Dietetic Oncology & Haematology Outpatient Service, as part of the Cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT). The post will be at band 7, for 16 hours per week, line managing a Band 6 Macmillan Dietitian and working closely with the community Macmillan Dietetic service, to provide a specialist Nutrition & Dietetic Service to optimise treatment and quality of life for cancer patients.

The post holder will work as part of the cancer multidisciplinary team (MDT), providing specialist nutrition and dietetic services to optimise nutrition and quality of life forcancer patients under the care of a Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT) Oncologist or Haematologist.

You will be joining our unique, integrated acute and community Nutrition and Dietetic Service in Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust, which also hosts the National Spinal Injuries Centre and the regional Burns Centre. We are a ‘great, friendly team’ and offer excellent opportunities for learning and support through clinical supervision, peer learning and CPD opportunities including supporting B & C student placements. We are very supportive, valuing our staff, and actively promote staff wellbeing, inclusivity and equality.

Our team consists of over 40 members of staff based at 4 locations across the county. The department also benefits from first-rate secretarial and IT support.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for the provision of specialised, evidence based dietetic support to cancer patients and their carers.

·To provide nutrition and dietary advice for patients diagnosed with cancer and their families, from point of diagnosis and throughout their cancer journey.

·To ensure referred patients are seen promptly in line with cancer pathways and based on clinical need.

·To undertake a comprehensive patient centred assessment (interpretation of biochemistry, anthropometrics, clinical condition, diet history and socio-economic circumstance) of patients including those with complex presentations/multi-pathologies and use advanced reasoning skills to set the nutritional goals for each patient.

·To use highly developed nutrition counselling skills and motivational interviewing techniques, to facilitate patients to overcome barriers to change.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential criteria

10. An appropriate degree recognised for registration with HCPC
11. Registered with HCPC
12. Documentary evidence of Continued Professional Development
13. Post graduate specialist training (equating to a module of masters degree or equivalent)

Desirable criteria

14. British Dietetic Association Member
15. Membership of Oncology Specialist Group of the BDA / PENG

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria

16. Ability to relate and communicate clearly at all levels with patients, colleagues and members of the MDT (verbal / written)
17. Ability to work effectively as part of a team
18. Ability to work flexibly and be adaptable to meet the changing requirements and needs of the service.
19. Ability to reflect and appraise own performance
20. Ability to state the case for nutritional intervention as part of the care plan
21. Able to deal with distressed, difficult or abusive patients or carers
22. Able to respond to unpredictable workpatterns and interruptions
23. Ability to manage and prioritise clinical caseload
24. Ability to document and record accurate records in line with national standards
25. Ability to record activity and other data manually and electronically
26. Competent user of IT equipment and basic software [email, word processing, data inputting, dietary assessment]
27. Ability to assist in developing educational resources to meet the needs of patients and carers which are evidence-based
28. Awareness of clinical governance and its implications for dietetics including importance of audit projects
29. Awareness of regulatory bodies (HCPC) and professional bodies (BDA) and code of practice and professional guidelines Commitment to engage in CPD, appraisal process and clinical supervision
30. Skills to train other health care professionals and student dietitians

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria

38. Substantial postregistration experience in dietetics, including experience at specialist level
39. Previous clinical experience and detailed knowledge of nutritional support for complex cancer related symptoms
40. Skilled in assessing nutritional requirements and developing nutrition care plans
41. Skilled in monitoring and developing artificial nutrition regimens for home enteral feeding
42. Skilled in assessment for enteral feeding products, equipment and regimens. Evidence of developing and monitoring these in complex patients
43. Accurate anthropometric skills
44. Experience of MDT participation and raising the profile of nutritional intervention as required
45. Experience of supporting other members of the dietetic team with problem solving, learning and caseload management
46. Experience in writing, reviewing and improving guidelines, standard operating procedures and service reports

47. Experience of supporting student dietitians
48. Experience of contributing to service development
49. Ability to plan and deliver education and training to clinical, nursing and patient groups
