Job Description:
Sandycombe Lodge in Twickenham/Richmond (“Turner’s House”) is a Grade 2* listed house designed by J.M.W. Turner for his own use. It has been open to the public as an independent museum since 2017. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead Turner’s House, shaping its future and ensuring its sustainability.
We seek an experienced heritage professional to serve as Museum Director, overseeing strategy, planning, marketing, fundraising, and daily operations. The role involves maximizing income through private/corporate hires, fundraising, partnerships, PR, and donor cultivation. The Museum Director will manage a small team, including the Operations Manager and Learning & Volunteer Manager, and will serve on the Board of Trustees.
Turner’s House is open Wednesday to Sunday, 12 noon-4 pm, with an annual closure from November to January. The Director will work on-site, coordinating staffing and operations with team members to ensure high standards of visitor experience.

Job Responsibilities:
* Manage the historic building and collection, ensuring their preservation and accessibility.
* Develop and implement strategic plans for the House’s growth and financial sustainability.
* Oversee fundraising efforts, including grant applications and donor engagement.
* Identify and develop income-generating activities and events.
* Create marketing strategies and establish partnerships to enhance visibility.
* Lead volunteer engagement and oversee learning programs.
* Report to the Trustee Board, participate in committees, and facilitate exhibitions and programs.
* Represent Turner’s House to stakeholders and the community.
* Manage budgets, oversee staff, contractors, and volunteers, ensuring compliance with health, safety, and data protection regulations.
Person Specification:
* Proven experience in strategic planning, income generation, and financial management in a heritage or similar organization.
* Experience in fundraising, grant applications, and securing corporate sponsorships.
* Experience in managing exhibitions, events, and projects within budget constraints.
* Self-motivated, proactive, and creative with strong problem-solving skills.
* Excellent communication skills, capable of acting as an ambassador locally, nationally, and internationally.
* Living within commuting distance of Turner’s House.
* Interest in history, art history, architecture, and Turner’s legacy.
