Role Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Maths Tutor to deliver high‑quality Functional Skills Maths teaching to learners at HMP Wayland. In this rewarding role, you will work with small groups of prison‑based learners to build their confidence, develop core numeracy skills, and help them progress towards recognised qualifications that support their long‑term goals, employability and personal development.
You will design structured lesson plans, deliver engaging sessions, and support learners at a range of levels, creating an inclusive and motivating environment that helps each individual reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching & Learning Delivery
Deliver engaging and effective Functional Skills Maths sessions from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2. - Build learners' confidence and competence across core numeracy skills. - Adapt delivery to meet a range of learning needs, abilities and starting points. - Provide continuous assessment, constructive feedback and clear progression planning. - Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessments, progression and achievement. Learner Support & Progression
Create a positive, supportive learning environment that encourages participation. - Support learners in developing wider skills such as problem‑solving, reasoning and independent learning. - Contribute to individual learning plans (ILPs) and regularly review learner progress. - Encourage learners to work towards personal and career‑focused goals.
Quality, Compliance & Collaboration
Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement of Maths delivery. - Ensure all teaching, learning and assessment activities meet quality assurance expectations. - Uphold safeguarding, equality, diversity and health & safety requirements at all times. - Work effectively with colleagues and prison teams to ensure smooth and compliant delivery.
Essential Criteria
Minimum GCSE Grade C/4 in Maths (or equivalent). - Ability to deliver Functional Skills Maths from Entry Level 1 to Level 2. - Strong subject knowledge and substantial experience in Maths‑related roles. - Experience delivering training or tutoring in an educational or vocational setting. - Ability to use a variety of teaching methods to engage different learning styles. - Strong communication, organisation and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Criteria
Teaching or assessing qualification (e.g., AET, PTLLS, CAVA). - Experience delivering Maths within prison education or alternative learning environments. - Willingness to work towards a teaching or assessing qualification (full training provided).
