We are currently recruiting for a Head of Humanities (Geography Specialist) to support, guide and join our established Humanities Team at the school. This is an exciting opportunity to join Henley Bank High School and become an integral member of the team.

We are a successful secondary school based in Brockworth, extremely close to junction 11a of the M5. The school has consistently been achieving excellent academic results over the past few years with the GCSE results of 2023 being in the top 1% of results in the country, as well as the highest results for any non-selective school in Gloucestershire. We opened our Sixth Form in September 2024 and are really excited to see what the next stage in the school’s journey will be. A crucial element of the school’s vision is ensuing that we are preparing our young people for the world of tomorrow. This role plays an essential part in achieving this.

Role Overview

The Head of Humanities will show enthusiasm and have the experience of leading initiatives within the department and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students and to support a designated curriculum areas as appropriate

The successful candidate will:

1. To contribute to the well-being and development of the school including the supervision of students and the guidance of teachers
2. To be passionate about their subject area
3. To show enthusiasm and have the experience of leading initiatives within the department
4. To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students as a Teacher/Tutor
5. To facilitate and encourage a learning experience which provides students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential
6. To contribute to raising standards of student attainment
7. To share and support the school’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for personal and academic growth
8. Present regularly to SLT on their findings and next steps for their remit

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

9. To act as a role model and an outstanding Head of Department
10. Lead on curriculum developments within the subject area and share expertise within the department
11. Quality assure provision to ensure the highest standards
12. Share best practice in subject meetings across the School and Greenshaw Learning trust
13. Keep up to date with new developments in Education
14. Lead improvements on outcomes and opportunities at a departmental level
15. To share in the responsibility for, and commitment to, the safeguarding and promotion of the well-being and discipline of all students
16. Ensuring the curriculum planning necessary; incorporating whole school policies, contributing relevant units/components to other school syllabuses, as may be required
17. Encouraging the selection of suitable teaching and learning styles, materials and subject matter in providing a differentiated approach to students
18. Encouraging team members to keep abreast of developments in their subject areas
19. Monitor and analyse the academic performance of students on an ongoing basis
20. Devise and implement appropriate revision/intervention strategies
21. Complete all self-evaluation documentation, in particular data analysis of student performance at KS3, KS4 and Post-16 as part of the whole school self-evaluation process
22. To perform particular assigned duties at the reasonable direction of the school Headteacher or their designated representatives
23. Attend regular team meetings for briefing, consultation, sharing of good practice and training
24. To provide subject information and an additional link with parents/carers and others in relation to work in your area
25. To support the effective induction for new staff and trainees (if applicable)
26. To undertake a designated programme of teaching across all key stages
27. To teach consistently high-quality lessons
28. To plan and deliver schemes of work and lessons that meet the requirements of KS3, 4 and 5
29. To be a role model for students, inspiring them to be actively interested in your subject
30. To complete the relevant documentation to assist in the tracking of students
31. To set expectations for staff and students in relation to standards of achievement and the quality of learning & teaching
32. To prioritise and manage time effectively, ensuring continued professional development in line with the role
33. To follow the school policies and procedures
34. To ensure the effective/efficient deployment of classroom support
35. To maintain discipline in accordance with the school procedures, and to encourage good practice with regard to punctuality, behaviour, standards of work and homework
36. To update professional knowledge and expertise as appropriate to keep up to date with developments in teaching practice and methodology

You will need:

37. Hold at least 5 GCSE’s or equivalent, which must include at least a Grade C/5 in Maths and English
38. Hold a recognised degree (or equivalent) with a good classification in a relevant subject teaching qualification (QTS)
39. Experience of holding a position of responsibility
40. Experience and Leadership development/training in Humanities Subjects
41. Previous Head of Department experience within an Educational Setting
42. Evidence of independent personal developments and wide reading of the latest research
43. Leading colleagues to support improving outcomes
44. Leading initiatives beyond your own subject
45. Evidence of conducting lesson drop ins and coaching colleagues
46. Be an excellent classroom practitioner
47. Ability to teach your subject area up to Key Stage 5
48. Knowledge of the latest subject specific thinking, including research and subject associations
49. Evidence of a positive impact on outcomes
50. Evidence of conducting lesson drop ins and coaching colleagues
51. Desire to further raise overall achievement in your subject that seeks to promote the highest standards of teaching and learning
52. Detailed knowledge of current curriculum and pedagogical developments in the teaching of your subject and the wider curriculum
53. A flexible approach to the teaching of your subject that seeks to promote the learning opportunities of all students and to secure the highest possible levels of achievement
54. Demonstrate a commitment to following the school’s principles of teaching, learning and assessment
