About the role

Location: Welwyn Garden City
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Buying Manager (Category Manager) to join our Fresh team on a maternity cover contract. This role focuses on the Food to Go and Deli categories and can be based at any of our offices in Welwyn, Wellingborough, Watford, or Eccles.
Job Summary
Maximising profitability of specified product categories, enhancing customer satisfaction, and improving cash profit.
Key Responsibilities
* Developing and implementing category plans to meet sales, margin, and profit targets while ensuring product availability.
* Growing own brand business through sourcing and strategic initiatives to increase sales and margins.
* Negotiating annually with suppliers to secure competitive terms.
* Responding to customer feedback to shape category plans and improve satisfaction.
* Handling customer queries and complaints professionally and promptly.
* Communicating category plans and objectives clearly to relevant teams to ensure understanding and buy-in.
* Ensuring product ranges reflect principles of good, better, and best.
* Collaborating with the senior team to identify opportunities and improve processes.
* Leading the category team, managing performance, and developing succession plans, supporting Booker’s values of inclusion and career development.
* Adhering to our Business Code of Conduct, acting with integrity, and championing diversity and inclusion.
Essential Skills and Experience
Operational Skills:
* Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.
* Ability to work independently, solve problems, and make commercial decisions.
* Attention to detail, report writing, data analysis, and accurate record-keeping.
* Knowledge of relevant markets and industry developments.
* Flexible work approach.
Qualifications and Experience:
* Degree-level education.
* Extensive experience in FMCG and leading a buying team.
* Proven ability to work autonomously.
* Experience in developing and managing marketing campaigns.
