Help transform children’s lives through the power of reading

Across the UK, far too many children grow up without access to books, reading support, or engaging literacy experiences. This gap isn’t just about books—it’s about opportunity. Children who struggle with reading often struggle with confidence, school engagement, and long-term educational outcomes. Families facing disadvantage may have limited resources, time, or support to develop regular reading habits. This is where Doorstep Library steps in.

Doorstep Library brings books, reading sessions, and encouragement directly into a child’s home environment, breaking down barriers that keep families from accessing traditional literacy services. Our volunteers don’t just help children learn to read—they help them discover a love for stories, imagination, and learning. This early intervention has lasting benefits on children’s confidence, wellbeing, and academic progress.

As we celebrate our 15th Anniversary, we know our approach works at scale. To continue growing sustainably, we are launching a Development Board—a dynamic group of philanthropists and leaders who believe in the life-changing impact of reading for pleasure.

We’re recruiting founding members. Could that be you?

As a member of the Doorstep Library Development Board, you will play a vital role in expanding our reach, strengthening our fundraising strategy, and ensuring more children get the support they deserve.

What You’ll Do

Development Board members work alongside our team to:

1. Champion our mission

Help us attract new donors—from individuals to corporates to trusts.

2. Raise awareness

Identify unique opportunities, shape high-impact events, and amplify our message within your networks.

3. Fuel our growth

Support the improvement of fundraising systems and approaches, helping us build a resilient pathway to scale.

Together, the Board aims to raise £200,000 by 31 December 2027.

Your Commitment

We’re looking for individuals who can commit to:

* A two-year term, with regular online and in-person engagement
* A personal donation towards our target each year of engagement, directly supporting our literacy programmes
* Leveraging your networks to generate new opportunities and partnerships

What We Offer You

As part of the Development Board, Doorstep Library will:

* Build a strong, collaborative community of mission-driven philanthropists
* Provide meaningful opportunities to connect with our families, volunteers, and partners
* Share regular updates, stories of impact, and organisational insights
* Equip you with tailored materials to support your outreach

Meetings take place quarterly, with additional one-to-ones and events as needed.

We are open to Development Board members who may be interested in also joining our Board of Trustees. This would either be a dual role (Development Board and Trustee Board) or a sole Development Board role. Please state in your application which you would like to apply for.

Be part of something that matters.

If you believe every child deserves the chance to discover the joy of reading—and the opportunity it unlocks—we’d love to hear from you.
