Your Role

Applies Engineering concepts and theories to deliver the development designs, calculations and technical solutions across a range of applications for Babcock products and services across the Engineering Product Lifecycle. An experienced Engineer, directly accountable for designs, calculations and technical solutions. Able to work under own initiative to produce high quality outputs. Capable of managing others and/or delivery of engineering and technical activities, through the application of process, domain knowledge and experience. Can apply a wider range of knowledge to complex situations. Provides mentoring to others.

The role

As a Welding Engineer, you’ll play an essential part in ensuring the integrity, safety and performance of welding activities across a range of major defence programmes. You’ll work at the forefront of engineering, supporting submarines, surface ships and major infrastructure projects, where precision, quality and technical excellence are paramount.

Day-to-day, you’ll take ownership of welding governance across the site, providing expert advice, driving innovation and helping shape processes that directly support national security. This role offers a dynamic, development‑focused environment where you can broaden your technical expertise, collaborate with skilled professionals and build a meaningful career in high‑impact engineering.

1. Take ownership of the technical governance of welding across Devonport, providing expert support to submarines, surface ships and major infrastructure projects.
2. Ensure compliance with Babcock’s Weld Quality Management System (ISO‑2) and uphold high welding standards across all activities.
3. Manage the introduction and implementation of new welding procedures, working closely with site welders and overseeing equipment and workshop practices.
4. Author technical reports, proposals and recommendations for specialist welding solutions using your materials expertise.
5. Assess subcontractor quality systems to ensure consistency, capability and alignment with Babcock’s welding requirements.

This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.

Essential experience of the Welding Engineer

6. Strong understanding of welding processes and techniques.
7. Experience working with welding quality systems or operational welding environments.
8. Ability to provide technical guidance and support to multidisciplinary teams.
9. Confidence in producing technical documentation or assessments.
10. Strong problem‑solving approach with a commitment to high safety and engineering standards.

Qualifications for the Welding Engineer

11. National Skills Framework Level 5 qualification (or equivalent), such as Foundation degree, Diploma, HND, BEng/BSc or MEng/MSc (in relevant engineering disciplines)
12. Additional welding, materials or quality‑related technical training or certifications - Desirable

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must be a sole UK national who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
