What you’ll be doing
In this specialist SEN role, you will support pupils with a range of needs, which may include:
* Autism (ASC)
* Severe or moderate learning difficulties
* Social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH)
* Sensory processing differences
* Communication needs, including non-verbal pupils
* Physical disabilities or mobility requirements
Your role may involve:
* Providing 1:1 support tailored to a child’s individual learning and wellbeing plan.
* Assisting small groups with structured sensory, communication or life-skills activities.
* Using visual aids, Makaton, PECS, or other alternative communication methods (training can be provided).
* Supporting regulation, emotional wellbeing and positive behaviour strategies.
* Helping pupils engage meaningfully in lessons, routines and personalised learning programmes.
* Working collaboratively with teachers, therapists, SENCOs and wider school staff.
* Ensuring a calm, safe and encouraging environment where every child feels valued and included.
What we’re looking for
You don’t need school-based SEN experience — what matters most is the right attitude. We’re looking for someone who is:
* Compassionate, patient and calm under pressure
* Able to adapt quickly and think on their feet
* Confident supporting pupils with behaviour, communication or sensory needs
* Comfortable using initiative while working closely within a multidisciplinary team
* Passionate about helping young people overcome barriers and thrive
* Willing to undertake relevant training
Experience in the following areas is highly valued (but not essential):
* Care or residential support
* Mental health support
* Youth work or mentoring
* Personal care or medical needs support
* Autism, SEMH, PMLD or complex needs environments
An Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one) is required.
