Job introduction
We're looking for a motivated Project Engineer to join our Major Projects Maintenance team based in Tipton. This team plays a vital role in keeping the West Midlands powered—carrying out essential 132kV inspections, maintenance, fault repairs and construction activities that protect the reliability and safety of our network.
You'll be primarily based at our Tipton depot, with travel to local substations and sites as part of your day‑to‑day work. Because this is an on‑site role, you'll need to live within roughly an hour's commute of the depot.
As part of the role, you may also join our standby rota—providing 24‑hour out‑of‑hours cover once every 9 days—helping us respond swiftly when our customers rely on us most.
Main Responsibilities
The management and control of projects work involving plant, overhead and underground systems, including:-
Project Safety (with a particular focus on ensuring strict compliance with Construction and Design Management (CDM) 2015 regulations)
Manage, maintain and repair the 132/33/11kV network across the
Demonstrate expertise in underground cables, overhead Pylons, Substations and protection schemes.
Network related risk management, liaising with company specialists
Procurement and Contractor Management
Senior authorised person duties
Optimising the 132 kV network availability through effective outage management & robust contingency planning.
Maintenance and problem solving on existing plant and equipment.
The commissioning and maintenance of protection systems.
The ideal candidate
Practical knowledge of protection and control systems, including experience commissioning equipment.
Confidence working with plant specifications and strong understanding of the electricity network.
Level 3 City & Guilds 2339 qualification.
Willingness to complete an HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Foundation Degree in Electrical Power Engineering if not already achieved.
Current Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status with operational authorisation up to 132kV.
Experience working within a DNO, iDNO or ICP environment.
Proven background in a high‑hazard industry with a strong commitment to health and safety.
Working knowledge of CDM 2015 regulations.
Ability to work with a high level of autonomy, adapt to changing priorities, and stay calm under pressure.
A strong focus on quality, safety and disciplined working practices.
Full UK driving licence and the flexibility to travel across the network services area.
Willingness to take part in the standby rota as required.
Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.
