Job Description
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for the mechanical design and development of large-scale static plant projects. Working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, the role will transform project requirements into practical and efficient design solutions.
The role requires technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and teamwork skills to guide projects through all phases while ensuring high standards of quality, timely delivery, and budget management.
Key Responsibilities
Project Design
1. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and translate them into innovative, manufacturable product designs.
CAD Modelling
1. Utilise CAD software to create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings.
Design Optimisation
1. Continuously evaluate and optimise designs for cost-effectiveness, manufacturability, and efficiency while maintaining product integrity.
Material Selection
1. Work with Senior Design Engineers to select appropriate materials based on cost, performance, and manufacturing requirements.
Collaboration
1. Communicate effectively with team members, suppliers, and stakeholders to ensure seamless design-to-production transitions.
Quality Assurance
1. Implement quality control measures to ensure products meet design specifications and industry standards.
Documentation
1. Assist in creating comprehensive design documentation including BOMs (Bill of Materials), design reports, and supporting documents.
Regulatory Compliance
1. Stay informed about industry regulations and standards to ensure all designs meet safety and compliance requirements.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential
1. Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
2. Experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally within heavy industrial equipment, recycling, or materials handling sectors.
3. Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks.
4. Strong understanding of fabrication, welding, and machining processes.
5. Knowledge of materials selection and structural design.
6. Ability to work independently and within a small team.
7. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
8. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
9. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
Desirable
1. Experience designing conveyors, hoppers, trommels, or other materials handling equipment.
2. Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and other engineering analysis tools.
3. Familiarity with SolidWorks PDM for 3D design and document management.
4. Understanding of automation and control systems in an industrial environment.
