BFI FAN Champion (Black and Global Majority audience inclusion)

Salary: £4,500 in 2026/27, growing to £5,000 in 2028/29 – this will represent a set number of days based on your daily rate.
Evidence shows that Black and Global Majority audiences remain under‑represented across UK independent exhibition. The BFI Film Audience Network EDI Champion (Black and Global Majority Audience Inclusion) will help to identify practical barriers and actionable opportunities for change, highlight effective models, and share achievable approaches that film exhibitors can adopt.
The Champion will conduct research, produce accessible, engaging resources, and provide advice for BFI Film Audience Network (FAN) member organisations. Ultimately, they will be responsible for helping film exhibitors welcome more Black and Global Majority audiences to their film screenings and events.
Purpose of the role
As the EDI lead for BFI FAN, Film Hub Scotland coordinates learning, resources and support to help Film Hub members make their organisations and events more equitable, inclusive and accessible. For the last three years, Access Consultant Charlie Little has led EDI work for Deaf and Disabled audiences. They have delivered webinars, regular Access Bulletins, an Access Directory, and have provided targeted support to Film Hub member organisations across the UK.
Now, Film Hub Scotland is looking for a freelancer or partner organisation to support a new strand of EDI work: Black and Global Majority audience inclusion. This project aims to identify practical barriers and actionable opportunities for welcoming Black and Global Majority audiences to film screenings and events. Additionally, it will highlight effective models to stakeholders and partners and share learnings that can be adopted by film exhibitors across the UK.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct secondary research into existing inclusion resources, training offers, and sector models
* Produce an Inclusion Directory summarising key findings, frameworks, and practical recommendations
* Develop case studies of UK film exhibitors successfully engaging Black and Global Majority audiences
* Provide consultations to FAN member organisations seeking to improve audience inclusion or develop anti‑racist programming
* Collaborate with the FHS team and, where relevant, with other FAN Champions, to explore cross‑cutting themes

* Community engagement and/or audience development
* Curatorial or programming work
* Work with Black and Global Majority communities
* Freelancers/organisations based in Scotland are particularly encouraged to apply.
They are also interested in those who combine research skills with practical, on-the-ground experience of audience development or cultural programming.

Ideally beginning in May 2026, but can be slightly flexible.
