Job Description

Job overview

Great Ormond Street Hospital Mortuary is inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals for the post of an Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT).

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our HTA and ISO credited forward-thinking team. We will consider applicants who are awaiting a Pass award for the level 3 diploma in APT in 2024. You will already have a significant range of skills and expertise in a mortuary environment. You must be able to communicate well with people and be willing to participate in all activities related to the mortuary. You will work as part of a team, with other professionals, and provide an exceptional service.

The duties are both physical and practical and include document control (electronic and written), preparing patients for family visits, and dealing with families directly. Meticulous attention to detail, recall of information, and ability to work with others, especially the bereaved, is vital. You will have experience and a clear understanding of working with the deceased and bereaved, ideally in a paediatric/perinatal environment. You will demonstrate knowledge of the processes following death, including documentation and options available to the bereaved. Knowledge of standards relevant to mortuary processes, such as HTA, ISO (ISO 15189), and Bereavement Services Standards, is expected.

Main duties of the job

1. Participate in all mortuary procedures, including administration, cleaning, and assistance at post-mortem and research.
2. Ensure all documentation and electronic records are accurate and completed daily.
3. Receive and make calls as necessary, maintaining confidentiality and information security.
4. Participate in routine and specialist work, including admission, measuring, registration, and identification of patients.
5. Receive referrals from internal and external service users, providing accurate information regarding time scales.
6. Assist service users with inquiries, following Trust policies.
7. Identify and address your own continuing professional development, maintaining a CPD folder.
8. Maintain training and competency records for all activities.
9. Stay up-to-date with current mortuary and bereavement practices, guidance from relevant authorities, and professional bodies.
