Neway International are seeking a Social Work Assistant to join our client, Cardiff Council, within the People & Communities Directorate.

Location: County Hall, Cardiff

Hours: 37 per week (09:00–17:00)

Start Date: 23 February 2026

DBS: Required

About The Service

Cardiff Children's Services are seeking Social Work Assistants to join their fostering service. This is an established, supportive team working under the guidance of the Principal Social Worker and Service Manager to deliver high‑quality support to foster carers and children.

The Role

The Social Work Assistant will hold a caseload of foster carers, providing support, supervision and practical assistance to ensure safe, stable and positive placements. You will contribute to assessments, planning and reviews, working closely with multi‑agency professionals to promote the wellbeing of children and young people.

This role requires a flexible, proactive approach as the service continues to develop.

Key Responsibilities

Hold and manage a caseload of foster carers, providing regular support and supervision.

Assist with the delivery of fostering services in line with statutory requirements.

Contribute to assessments, care planning and reviews.

Support foster carers with practical guidance, placement stability and problem‑solving.

Work collaboratively with social workers, health, education and other professionals.

Record case information accurately using council systems.

Review quality of care and contribute to person‑centred planning.

Undertake risk assessments and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns.

Participate in training and development to support effective practice.

Work independently and as part of a wider team.

Candidate Requirements

Experience working with children and young people.

Experience working with multi‑agency professionals.

Skills in assessment, planning and delivering support.

Understanding Of Relevant Legislation, Including

Social Services and Well‑Being (Wales) Act

Fostering Regulations

Trauma‑informed practice (desirable)

Ability to risk assess and deliver person‑centred care plans.

Confident using IT systems to record case information.

Ability to work flexibly, independently and within a team.
