Job Overview
We have an opportunity for a skilled Lead Electronics Engineer to join the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) team based in Edinburgh. You will be responsible for the electronics development of a key array subsystem within the Team Tempest demonstrator Mult‑Function Antenna. This UK‑only project is a key part of the overall GCAP programme and will be part of the flight trials programme on Leonardo’s 757 trials aircraft, Excalibur. This is a once‑in‑a‑generation opportunity to play a fundamental role in a defence programme of critical national importance and to shape the future of Combat Air capability in the UK.
Key Responsibilities
The role is varied but focuses on the design, integration and testing of the radar array subsystem and several inter‑connected multi‑layer printed circuit board assemblies. As a Lead Electronics Engineer, you will:
* Develop high‑quality, robust electronics designs.
* Create and maintain detailed design documentation.
* Ensure all certification processes are adhered to and documented.
* Keep the design under configuration management and provide plans and reports on progress.
* Take technical leadership of design engineers through the lifecycle.
* Own the electronics work package activities within the array subsystem.
* Plan for subsystem level integration and verification.
* Contribute towards LRI integration and verification plans.
* Produce material for design reviews and chair design reviews within the Physical Hardware Design Process.
* Mentor and supervise junior team members.
The role is broad in scope, covering design through test, integration, and certification. It is a highly hands‑on role with a focus on hardware prototyping, lab measurement, debugging, integration, testing, and validation of the full array sub‑system. It is a hybrid working role with approximately 60% of working hours in the Edinburgh office.
Professional Development Areas
* Domain knowledge of complex electronics systems in a fast‑paced, dynamic development team.
* Continuous learning through training and mentoring in engineering lifecycle processes, leadership, and personal development.
* Teamwork alongside professional engineers in a collaborative environment.
* Leadership through progress and delivery from a team of engineers to complete testing, validation, and verification of the array sub‑system.
* Connections within an expansive team of about 9,000 people across eight major UK sites.
* Engineering heritage of 100 years’ experience in pioneering development.
Requirements
* Degree qualified in Electronics Engineering or related science or equivalent work experience.
* Expert‑level proficiency in at least one aspect of electronics design (analogue, mixed‑signal, digital or power electronics).
* Expert level experience in industry‑standard toolsets and lab measurement techniques for complex electronic systems.
* Experience of team leadership and work package management.
* Strong interpersonal skills, including coaching less‑experienced members.
* Good knowledge of developing electronics within a development process framework.
* Demonstrated experience in most areas of the design lifecycle from requirements definition to implementation, integration, test and delivery.
* Collaboration across functions in a multidisciplinary team (Mechanical, Firmware, Software, Manufacturing and Layout).
Security Clearance
This role is subject to pre‑employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). Additional Personnel Security Controls, such as National Security Vetting (NSV), may apply and could include meeting the eligibility requirements for The Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV).
Benefits
* Generous leave with the opportunity to accrue up to 12 additional flexi‑days each year.
* Employer‑contributed pension scheme up to 15%.
* Access to mental health support, financial advice and employee‑led inclusion networks.
* Eligibility for bonus scheme for employees at management level and below.
* Free access to 4,000+ online courses via Coursera and LinkedIn Learning.
* Referral programme financial reward.
* Flexible benefits up to £500 annually (private healthcare, dental, family cover, tech & lifestyle discounts, gym memberships).
* Flexible working hours with hybrid options. Part‑time is possible.
