Main Duties of the Job

Using evidence-based practice to ensure service development, trauma-informed care, and support for independence and recovery within the community. Supporting service users, their carers, and the wider network.

Working within a multidisciplinary team of consultants, psychologists, registered and non-registered staff to provide outstanding mental health assessments and evidence-based interventions for individuals with severe and enduring mental health difficulties and complex emotional needs. Promoting high-quality trauma-informed care to meet key performance indicators, fostering a positive learning environment, and maintaining psychological safety.

Main Duties of the Job

This is a varied Practice Lead role, offering opportunities to provide specialist clinical input, supervision, and consultation. Representing the team at clinical and operational meetings, with chances to lead service development initiatives. Experience or willingness to develop skills in service and project management is desirable.

Job Responsibilities

Service Design and Improvement

Support the implementation and monitoring of care pathway quality and improvement plans. Ensure clinical effectiveness systems are embedded and sustainable, based on audits and evidence-based care. Participate in quality assurance initiatives and engage with stakeholders to develop services.

Service Delivery and Resource Management

Ensure governance and assurance systems are in place. Provide expert advice on staffing and resource issues that may impact clinical care. Monitor team performance regarding incidents and complaints. Ensure services are delivered by competent practitioners, identifying training needs and providing development opportunities. Participate in on-call rota if requested.

Practice Quality and Workforce Development

Lead in coordinating multidisciplinary team working and service delivery standards. Support workforce development and act as a role model in providing services for people with mental health problems. Monitor and improve quality through audits, guideline adherence, and pathway development.

Line Management/Clinical Supervision

Work with the Team Manager to deliver effective supervision and ensure team members access CPD. Provide cross-cover for other Practice Leads as needed.

Additional Responsibilities

Hold a portfolio of responsibilities, including organizational standards, representing the service at meetings, and leading practice development projects. Manage key practice areas such as safeguarding and complaints.

Personal Professional Duties

Minimize dependency, promote recovery, communicate effectively, and ensure safe, competent care. Take accountability for your practice, participate in supervision, and demonstrate specialist knowledge. Respect service users’ values and ensure professional boundaries.

Communication and Relationship Skills

Provide high-quality services through effective communication, negotiation, and conflict management. Share information confidently, represent the team, and engage with multi-agency forums. Ensure accurate record-keeping and uphold confidentiality. Communicate with non-English speakers using interpreters. Participate in team meetings and service planning.

Knowledge, Training, and Experience

Maintain up-to-date practice, knowledge, and skills. Have extensive experience in a community mental health setting, with knowledge of relevant policies and legislation such as the Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act, and others. Evidence of CPD and relevant qualifications is required.

Analytical and Judgment Skills

Provide appropriate interventions, match patient needs with resources, and make clinical judgments. Lead in risk assessment, incident review, and service development. Support workforce planning for the future.

Person Specification


Knowledge

* Extensive professional knowledge in community mental health, underpinned by relevant training or experience.
* Knowledge of crisis impact, evidence-based practice, and relevant legislation.
* Understanding of NHS and social care policy, and commitment to CPD.


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse, Social Worker, or Occupational Therapist with a minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience, including 18 months in a community setting.
* Postgraduate diploma/degree related to health/social care or equivalent experience.


Skills

* Leadership, team management, coaching, assessment, facilitation, and influencing skills.
* Excellent communication, organizational, and IT skills.
* Ability to manage complex clinical situations and challenge traditional practices.


Experience

* At least 3 years in a senior clinical role with management experience.
* Experience in multidisciplinary teams, mental health crisis management, and both inpatient and community settings.
