PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to £65,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
ROLE PURPOSE
Join BBC Studios as a Senior Data Engineer and play a key role in evolving our data platform. You’ll design, build and own secure, scalable and trusted data pipelines that power critical products and insights across the organisation. As a Senior Data Engineer, you’ll help shape core patterns, standards and platform capabilities, influence technology choices, and raise the bar for engineering and data quality. Your work will enable teams to make better data‑driven decisions and support products and services used by millions of people globally.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
* Develop high quality, automated pipelines for ingesting, transforming and publishing data, ensuring reliability, scalability, security and performance across the platform.
* Ensure data pipelines and platform capabilities are built with appropriate security, privacy and governance controls, protecting audience data and enabling its safe, compliant use across BBC Studios.
* Contribute to (and often lead) the design of core blueprints, standards and capabilities, influencing technology choices, workflows and tooling.
* Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, partnering with engineers, architecture, product and data governance to deliver high quality solutions for our internal and pan‑BBC partners.
* Stay up to date with emerging data and platform technologies, help evolve ways of working, and support the growth of others through knowledge sharing, mentoring and coaching as the team scales.
* Support the platform in production, contributing to shared operational responsibility and incident resolution when required.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
* Excellent collaborator: Experience of stakeholder management and comfortable mentoring, coaching, developing and supporting others.
* Experience with SQL, DBT and familiarity with Data Warehousing technologies, including pipeline orchestration.
* Strong engineering practices, including security by design, writing clean, well‑tested and maintainable code, and working with CI/CD platforms.
* Knowledge of database design, big data processing technologies, and building scalable data pipelines.
* Delivery focused, with experience working effectively with Scrum or Kanban methodologies.
* Familiarity with Cloud technologies and IAC, preferably AWS and Terraform.
* Experience using AI assisted development tools (e.g. Copilot) to improve development efficiency.
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED
* Experience using Agentic AI tooling such as Codex, Claude Code.
* Familiarity with Snowflake DWH.
