Student Specialist (Health Visitor or School Nurse)

Are you ready for an exciting opportunity? Do you want to make a difference to children, young people, and families in Cornwall? We are pleased to offer Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) Student Health Visitor or School Nurse training posts starting in September 2025.

Main duties of the job

This is a fully funded training program to qualify as a registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor or School Nurse). It is open to all qualified Nurses and Midwives registered with the NMC. We provide supportive placements with dedicated practice teachers and supervisors to assist your learning journey.

About us

We offer a supportive supervision framework, including clinical caseload management, safeguarding children supervision, and clinical supervision.

We have excellent career development pathways within our service and are committed to supporting our staff's growth over their career journey.

Job responsibilities

The Service & Team:

Our health visiting and school nursing services operate across six localities within Cornwall, covering areas from the border with Devon, such as Bude, Launceston, Liskeard, down to Helston and Penzance.

Most teams are based together with Early Help and Social Care colleagues, sharing electronic records to enhance communication and coordination. We deliver an evidence-based, family-centered public health service focused on identifying health needs and vulnerabilities within families and communities.

This is an excellent opportunity to join our innovative and collaborative service, aimed at meeting the needs of local communities and improving outcomes for children and young people in Cornwall and IOS.

The course adopts a family, child, and workplace-centered public health approach, working with individuals, families, and populations to improve health and address health inequalities. It requires working within a dynamic socio-cultural and service context, networking, and developing services in partnership with service users, professionals, and voluntary sectors. You will learn to lead, assess, collaborate, evaluate public health services, and take responsibility for their safe and effective management.

Public Health (Specialist Community Public Health Nursing) - Postgraduate Diploma - UWE Bristol

The Role:

This is a full-time fixed-term position with an Agenda for Change band 5 salary. It is a training contract starting in September 2025. Internal candidates will undertake a secondment for one year, while external candidates will receive a fixed-term contract from Cornwall Council for a one-year full-time course at University West of England (UWE). The course includes taught modules at UWE and clinical placements in Cornwall, involving travel and overnight stays. Successful completion leads to registration on Part 3 of the NMC register, enabling application for SCPHN HV/SN vacancies within Cornwall Council. Seconded students will return to their previous roles if no vacancies or if unsuccessful at interview.

For more information, please contact us. This position is subject to an enhanced criminal record disclosure check.

What you'll need to succeed:

A qualified NMC-registered nurse or midwife (children, adult, learning disability, or mental health) with post-qualification experience working with children and families, and a strong interest in social determinants of health and public health.

A reflective, emotionally intelligent practitioner who utilizes supervision effectively and is interested in addressing children's, young people's, and families' health needs.

Ability to address sensitive issues clearly and supportively, with adaptability and innovation to meet diverse needs.

Applicants must hold a live registration on the NMC register (Part 1 or 2) and demonstrate a classified honours degree at 2:2 or above in nursing or midwifery, or a diploma with recent academic study, preferably at Masters level, as the course is a Level 7 academic program.
