The Operational Team Lead will be responsible for the day‑to‑day coordination and delivery of maintenance activities across the Medical Engineering Service, including the Medical Equipment Library. Reporting to the Medical Engineering Service Manager, the post holder will provide line management for the Engineering Team and the Medical Equipment Library Team Lead, ensuring high standards of safety, compliance, and service delivery.
Main duties of the job
The role combines operational leadership with technical expertise. The post holder will continue to undertake maintenance and repair activities where required to support service resilience, while leading the coordination of planned and reactive maintenance programmes. They will act as deputy to the Medical Engineering Service Manager, supporting policy implementation, risk management, and governance reporting.
Provide senior maintenance, fault diagnosis, repair, and performance verification of high risk and specialist medical devices, including anaesthetic and critical‑care ventilators, neonatal monitoring and incubator systems, infusion devices such as volumetric pumps, syringe drivers, and PCA devices. Act as a technical escalation point for complex equipment failures and safety‑critical incidents involving specialist medical devices. Ensure all equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions, MHRA guidance, and relevant standards.
Person Specification
Criteria
* Degree or HNC/HND in Biomedical, Electronic, Mechanical or related Engineering discipline or equivalent level of manufacturer‑approved training on relevant device categories.
* Evidence of leadership or management training.
* Significant experience in the maintenance, repair, and calibration of medical devices.
* Experience supervising or line managing technical staff.
* Knowledge of MHRA Managing Medical Devices, CE/UKCA marking, and relevant HTMs.
* Experience of risk management, incident investigation, and quality assurance processes.
* Membership of an appropriate professional registered body (IHEEM, Engineering Council).
* Further qualification in management, quality, or leadership.
* Experience in procurement of medical devices.
* Experience contributing to capital planning and business cases.
* Experience of ISO 9001 quality management systems.
