Job Description

We are recruiting a fixed-term role, up to 2 years, for somebody with experience of working in or regulating energy sectors, including various scales of combustion plant, waste incineration and refineries. You will provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance and training; develop strategy for our sectors and produce tools to regulate, support development and deliver environmental outcomes; commission and manage external research projects where needed; and work with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, internal operations teams, trade associations and other key industry players. Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do, and you will be asked to have an incident role and to be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.


Team

The Energy & COMAH team are part of Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation of Environment & Business (E&B) Directorate. Our technical experts lead on the definition of standards for our sectors, providing strategic direction and tools in support of regulation, guidance and training to deliver new duties, and environmental best practice. We use evidence, expertise and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy, legislation and secure resources.


Experience / Skills Required

In your capability-based answers please demonstrate your:

* ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work
* relevant technical and regulatory knowledge, and experience of the work area for the role in question, gained either by working within and/or regulating relevant processes. This will include knowledge of control measures for emissions to air where relevant
* ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies and academia
* work cooperatively as part of a team to achieve common goals


Competences

* Legislative Knowledge – Definition: Applies a knowledge of statutory environmental and technical requirements to protect both the Environment Agency and the environment. As a senior advisor you will give advice on regulatory requirements applying to combustion plants of different sizes and purposes. Please describe two differing combustion installations and how their environmental impacts and regulatory requirements differed.
* Works in Teams – Definition: Works co-operatively as part of a team to achieve common goals. Describe a time you worked as part of a team to deliver a portfolio of work and how priorities and responsibilities were agreed and how you flexed to help deliver.
* Builds and Sustains Relationships – Definition: Develops and maintains effective working relationships. Provide an example of working with different types of stakeholders and how you varied your approach.

This vacancy closes end of October. Interviews are expected to be held in person in Birmingham, by the end of November. It would be anticipated that this role would require some travel.
