Princess Anne Ward is a 33‑bed emergency and elective ward specialising in surgery and urology. Health Care Assistants (HCAs) are members of the care team, working under the supervision and guidance of registered nurses, midwives, and other professional staff.
HCAs assist in planning, implementation, evaluation, and delivery of care by supporting registered staff, patients, and families. This is achieved through specific care tasks performed after formal training and assessment. Basic nursing experience and strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
Clinical Duties
* Assist with basic nursing care, including washing, moving and handling, mouth care, eye care, urine testing, pressure area care, continence care, catheter care, and general patient comfort.
* Assist with transferring patients to the ward on discharge.
* Clean and prepare bed areas for new admissions.
* Damp dust equipment and bed areas daily, clearing unused equipment.
* Clean and check equipment daily.
* Be aware of and implement the Trust’s procedures and protocols, including Moving and Handling, Barrier Nursing, Cross Infection, Cardiac Arrest, Fire, Major Incident, dealing with patients’ property, dealing with violence and aggression, incident reporting, and any other relevant procedures and protocols.
The Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS) brings together key health, care, community, and voluntary sector organisations from across the area. It aims to work together in partnership to join up health and care services, improve population health and wellbeing, and reduce health inequalities. One such example is the launch of the HCA Academy, an IcS initiative between Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust and Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust to support the incoming HCAs. The academy models a 'one workforce' cross‑system approach to onboarding, induction, education, and experience of HCAs.
Successful candidates will be able to access additional support provided by the HCA Academy following their induction with MSEFT, including development opportunities, pastoral support, staff rewards and access to HCA‑exclusive resources such as an HCA App.
For further information, please see the attached job description. The competencies expected of the post holder may change where specific skills or knowledge are required to deliver care within specific clinical areas.
