Responsibilities of the SEMH Teaching Assistant (Primary): Providing one-to-one and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs. Assisting with personalised learning and behaviour plans alongside teachers and SENCOs. Helping students develop emotional regulation and positive coping strategies. Creating a safe and structured learning environment that fosters engagement. Encouraging positive relationships between students and staff. Supporting the delivery of well-being and social skills interventions. Tracking student progress and providing feedback to teachers and support teams. Requirements of the SEMH Teaching Assistant (Primary): A relevant qualification in education, psychology, or child development (e.g., CACHE Level 3, NVQ). Experience supporting children with SEMH needs in schools, alternative provisions, or youth work. Knowledge of the primary curriculum and adapting learning for children with SEMH challenges. Understanding of behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques. A strong grasp of attachment theory and trauma-informed practices. Patience, resilience, and a nurturing approach to working with children. Excellent teamwork and communication skills. An enhanced DBS on the update service or willingness to apply for one.
