Apprentice salary rates 2026:
* Aged 21 and over: £12.84 per hour
* Aged 18 to 20: £10.96 per hour
* Aged under 18: £8.08 per hour
Highways, Transport and Operations are currently seeking dedicated individuals for the position of Tree Surgeon (Arborist) Apprentices. These positions provide a fantastic opportunity to work within a wide range of arboriculture services while gaining practical, hands‑on experience and essential industry qualifications.
This 24‑month apprenticeship programme will immerse you in the industry and equip you with the knowledge and practical skills necessary for success. As an Arborist Apprentice, you will assist in the delivery of our diverse arboriculture services while undertaking learning and development to attain the necessary skills and qualifications to become a certified arborist.
Selection Process and Qualifications
As part of the apprenticeship you may be required to undertake Functional Skills in English and Maths. The selection process will include an initial assessment and an interview to evaluate your suitability, commitment and interest in the programme.
Unique Residential Requirement
During the apprenticeship the candidate is required to stay overnight at the college. In the first year, 4 nights per week for 7 non‑consecutive weeks; in the second year, 4 nights per week for 3 non‑consecutive weeks. Accommodation arrangements and further details will be discussed during the interview process.
Hours of Work
Work hours are between 7:30am and 3.39pm. Specific daily work patterns will be agreed upon to meet service demands. The position totals 37 hours per week.
