As a switchboard operator, you will be an essential link in the hospital's communication system. You will serve as the first point of contact for the public, medical staff, and other hospital departments. Given the critical nature of calls, training and experience are essential to connect callers efficiently and accurately.
Your responsibilities will include:
1. Answering all incoming calls promptly and connecting callers to the correct recipient or department.
2. Utilizing all extensions and switchboard features for efficient call handling.
3. Contacting bleepholders via the ‘bleep’ system.
4. Ensuring appropriate authorities are contacted in case of fire, security issues, or major incidents.
5. Alerting emergency teams for medical emergencies such as cardiac arrests, traumas, or strokes.
6. Operating VDU consoles with internal and external directories to manage calls.
7. Using bleep consoles [LCUs] and other computer programs.
8. Updating and implementing changes to the on-call departmental rota and supporting on-call staff.
9. Using patient records software to locate patients out of hours.
10. Liaising with GPs regarding patient admissions.
11. Maintaining records for audit purposes, including taxi journeys, samples, and staff on-call duties.
You will also attend mandatory training courses relevant to your role.
