We're looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead our new payments team and oversee the development of critical systems that power millions of transactions for sports fans across the US. This role combines hands on technical leadership with people management, focusing on building and scaling systems and integrations with 3rd parties for withdrawals, deposits, refunds and more. This is a critical team within FanDuel that interacts with a lot of internal and external engineering teams so the service needs to be fast, reliable and high quality
You'll lead a collaborative team that values strong technical skills, operational excellence, and the ability to work effectively in a regulated environment while developing and mentoring talented engineers.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead, mentor and develop a team of software engineers through regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development planning
* Drive technical excellence by participating in decisions and some hands on coding (Java, Spring Boot, React and some Python)
* Communicate effectively with stakeholders across internal and external engineering teams, translating technical concepts for various audiences
* Foster operational excellence (leaving things better than when you found them) and establish best practices
* Guide sprint ceremonies like daily huddles, backlog refinement, sprint planning, sprint review and sprint retrospective
* Promote code review culture and pair-programming practices across the team
* Lead problem-solving and debugging efforts, including production support coordination
* Collaborate with AWS cloud services for deployment and infrastructure decisions
* Build strong relationships and collaborate closely with internal and external engineering teams
* Handle performance management, hiring, and team growth initiatives
What We're Looking For:
Technical Skills:
* Strong hands-on experience in Java OR React (with the ability to contribute across the stack)
* Proven cloud experience (we use AWS) with ability to guide architectural decisions
* Deep testing experience and commitment to code quality standards
* DevOps and operational deployment experience beneficial
* Production support environment experience with on-call coordination
Leadership & Communication Skills:
* People management experience in a technical environment
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to explain complex technical concepts
* Strong emotional intelligence and ability to give constructive feedback
* Experience with performance management, conflict resolution, and difficult conversations
* Proven ability to mentor and develop junior and senior engineers
Background & Mindset:
* Exceptional collaboration skills with internal and external stakeholders
* Great listener who values teamwork over dogmatic approaches and builds consensus
* Comfortable with operational responsibilities and managing on-call duties (up to around 1 week every two months)
* Autonomous working style with hands-on technical approach
* Growth mindset with passion for developing others

Location: Our Scottish tech hub is based in central Edinburgh and is fitted with fabulous amenities including a gym, showers, bike parking, gaming pods, multiple breakout areas, meeting rooms, a roof terrace and much more. We operate a hybrid model for this role, where we normally spend around 1-2 days in the office per week.
