Consultant in Acute Medicine & optional sub‑specialty of choice

Applications are invited for Consultant Physicians in Acute Medicine and sub‑specialty of choice to work across the University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough sites in Cardiff. The hospitals provide a full range of secondary care services locally and tertiary care facilities across Wales. This appointment offers the chance to broaden the existing sub‑specialty mix in stroke, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, respiratory medicine, cardiology, pharmacology, and renal medicine.
The basic salary range for this post is £110,240 per annum to £160,951 per annum, and the role is full time with consideration for flexible working arrangements.
Main duties of the job
Post holders will work a varied job plan that includes clinical sessions in the Emergency Department / Assessment Unit, Same Day Emergency Care Unit, Virtual Ward, and Short Stay Units. On‑call frequency is currently one evening per month followed by an early‑morning shift every 17 days, then a second evening session with on‑call from home after 10 pm, again every 17 days. Two sessions may be reserved for work in another specialty of choice, should the holder be suitably trained.
Post holders are expected to drive new ways of working with colleagues in the Emergency Unit, Primary Care and in‑patient specialties, and to act as a key clinician in developing and improving pathways and outcomes for acute medical patients.
Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of the expected date of receipt of a CCT at interview. Referees covering at least the last 3 years of employment/training history must be provided; if the applicant is currently or has most recently been a substantive or locum consultant for more than 12 months, an additional referee, the Medical Director, must also be supplied.
Qualifications
* On GMC Specialist Register for Specialty Registrar with CCT due within six months of interview date (Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application)
* Research degree (e.g., MD, PhD)
* CCT in Acute Medicine
Experience
* Acute General Medicine covering all medical sub‑specialties
* Sub‑specialty experience
* High‑dependency critical care experience
Skills
* Evidence of effective team and multidisciplinary working
* Effective and demonstrable communication skills
Clinical Governance
* Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding of audit’s role in improving practice
* Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation (or equivalent)
