Job Description

Looking for an opportunity to lead high-quality psychiatric care in a supportive environment where your clinical expertise and leadership can make a genuine impact? Join Dunnock View as a Consultant Psychiatrist and play a key role in shaping recovery-focused care for service users while influencing the future development of the service.

In this rewarding role, you will provide psychiatric assessments and interventions for patients within the service, while offering specialist clinical expertise to the wider multidisciplinary team. You will lead on clinical decision‑making, care planning and treatment formulation, ensuring patients receive holistic, evidence-based care in line with NICE guidelines and best practice standards.

As the Responsible Clinician and Approved Clinician, you will oversee a suitable caseload, lead the Care Programme Approach process and fulfil statutory duties under the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. You will work collaboratively with MDT colleagues, external care coordinators, commissioners, GPs and practice nurses to ensure service users receive high-quality support for both their mental and physical health needs.

The role also offers the opportunity to contribute beyond direct clinical care. You will be actively involved in clinical governance, service development and business planning, helping to shape and improve the wider service in line with organisational goals. Alongside supporting assessments for new referrals and admissions, you will supervise and support junior medical staff, promote evidence-based practice and ensure accurate clinical recording and reporting.

You will be supported by an experienced Medical Secretary and wider administration team, allowing you to focus on delivering outstanding patient care while contributing to the strategic direction of the service.

Other responsibilities

Clinical governance and quality assurance

  • Contribute to clinical governance and responsibility for setting and monitoring standards.
  • Participate in clinical audit and other local assurance processes.
  • Participate in service/team evaluation and the planning of future service developments.

Quality improvement

  • Lead and manage a team in a way that supports the development of a culture of continuous improvement and learning.
  • Use a quality improvement approach to solve complex problems, lead service developments, and promote change using a systematic QI methodology.
  • Empower the team to resolve local issues using QI tools and methods without staff having to seek permission.
  • Promote awareness and understanding of quality improvement and share learning and successes from quality improvement work.

On-call and cover arrangements

  • Participation in the senior on-call rota.
  • Support the service by contributing to the cover of colleagues on annual leave or other leave.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • To hold MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • Be an Approved Clinician and approved under the terms of section 12 (2) MHA 1983/2007 or within three months of achieving this status at the time of appointment; ensure status is renewed according to agreed procedures.
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months.
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience in acute settings or comparable service.
  • Experience of working with different cultural contexts (Desirable).
  • Excellent knowledge in speciality.
  • Excellent clinical skills using a bio‑psycho‑social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
  • Make decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others.
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
  • Driving may constitute a part of your role.
