The Healthcare Support Worker role is a great starting point to begin a lifelong career in healthcare or an excellent opportunity to gain new skills and experience.
One of the most amazing aspects of this role is you will meet people from all walks of life. The healthcare support worker role is a key role in the healthcare team. You can make a positive impact on a patient and the care they receive. We know the work we do is rewarding but tough. We have an extensive support system in place for staff support who can offer 24 hour support and guidance to help you look after yourself whilst caring for others.
Main duties of the job
When you start we’ll give you the training you need to feel safe and supported in the role. We’ll support you achieving the care certificate which is a universal qualification, recognised across the health sector. We’ll give you training in your specialist area so you are able to grow and develop your career with us at Royal Papworth. We’re passionate about education and investing in our staff.
Examples of what you may do as part of the role are:
* Washing and dressing patients
* Serving meals and feeding patients
* Help patients to move around
* Communicating to patients and their families
* Taking patients observations
* Assisting with clinical tasks e.g. taking blood sugar recordings

Qualifications
* Successful completion of Care Certificate within 12 weeks of appointment
* Complete specialty-required knowledge competencies within agreed time period (up to 6 months)
* Must possess a willingness to undertake further study to achieve competency levels required
* Specific specialty on-the-job training
* Good general standard of education to vocational level 3 (GCSE 'A' level standard or equivalent)
Experience
* Communicating with a range of people from different backgrounds
* Understanding the role of the Health Care Support Worker
* Knowledge of personal care and related procedures, clinical observations, relevant legislation
* Complete specialty-required skills within agreed time period (up to 6 months)
* Work effectively in a team
* Demonstrate effective and safe care
* Contribute to the support and development of new staff
* Work under pressure
* Information technology use
* Attention to detail e.g. patient records
* Accuracy (words and numbers)
* Effective written and verbal communication skills (literacy and numeracy)
* Good observation skills and recognition of the importance of reporting
