About the Department
The Department of Vascular Surgery consists of 5 WTE NHS Consultant staff (excluding this post), 1 Specialist Doctor, 1 Specialty Registrar, 3 Clinical Fellows, 1 Core Trainee, 3 Resident Doctors (FY2 level) and 4 Resident Doctors (FY1 level). We are supported by 1 Vascular Nurse Consultant, 1 Clinical Nurse Specialist and 1 Physician Associate. The unit includes 18 beds in Ward 215 and 6 Vascular Rehab Beds at Woodend Hospital, with a modern Vascular Laboratory (1 Lead Scientist, 2 Vascular Technologists, 1 Band 3 HCSW) and supporting administrative staff.
General Outpatient Clinics are run from a dedicated Outpatient clinic area, along with a Day case / Outpatient (office) based Endovenous Thermal (EVLT) service. The department is one of six centres in Scotland running the National Screening Programme for AAA disease. An Endovascular service is delivered jointly with Interventional Radiology, and the department works closely with Nephrology to support Renal access.
The Vascular Unit serves the Grampian population and also covers the Orkney and Shetland Islands. All patients are treated within Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, with strong links to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin. Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is designated as the Major Trauma Centre for the North of Scotland (NoS) and provides a specialist service to other hospitals in the network. The Vascular Unit participates in the primary Adult Code Red for Major Trauma calls.
The Role
We are seeking enthusiastic, dedicated and forward-thinking individuals to join our dynamic team. The applicant should work effectively within a multidisciplinary clinical team and be willing to participate in improvement and redesign. The successful candidate will join the Consultant rota and is expected to work a one in five rota with prospective cover for holidays and study leave. Although this is a senior role with the expectation of substantially autonomous practice, appropriate support and supervision will be provided by the Consultant group to aid development and ensure clinical governance.

UK-trained applicants should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register from the date of interview. CESR or Portfolio Pathway route doctors are eligible to apply for a substantive Consultant post only once CESR or Portfolio Pathway specialist registration is awarded. Applicants with an International Recognised Specialist Qualification approved by the GMC should have confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register.
Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive appointment is made. While in locum employment, an application to obtain CESR or Portfolio Pathway Specialist Registration can be made to the GMC.
