Purchasing & Production Planning Manager

Automation & Bespoke Machinery Manufacturing
I’m working with an engineering-led automation and machinery manufacturer that designs and builds bespoke industrial systems for a wide range of sectors.
This is a key operational role within the business, taking ownership not only of purchasing but also production planning, stock control, goods in / out and project kitting across a live manufacturing environment.
The business designs and builds technically complex, BOM-driven machinery in-house, with fabrication, machining, electrical build and final assembly all operating on site. Success in this role directly impacts workshop flow, project delivery, supplier performance and margin.
This is far more than a transactional purchasing role.
You will take full responsibility for purchasing across live projects, including supplier negotiation, RFQs, purchase orders, lead times, cost control and commercial agreements. Alongside this, you will manage production planning and material flow across machining, fabrication, laser / bend and electrical departments, ensuring resources and parts are aligned to workshop capacity and project milestones.
The role also covers stock control, goods in / out, kitting and subcontract resource coordination, so it requires someone who enjoys being close to the workshop and understands how production actually runs.
This would suit someone who has come from a manufacturing, production engineering or technical purchasing background and has progressed into planning, operations or supply chain leadership within machinery, fabrication, automation or special purpose equipment.
You must be commercially strong with suppliers, confident reading technical drawings and BOMs, and able to make practical decisions around lead times, outsourcing, stock levels and production priorities.
This is an engineering-led SME environment where people need to think ahead, solve problems early and keep production moving.
If you enjoy being close to the shop floor, managing real production challenges and having genuine influence on delivery performance, this is well worth a conversation.
