Job Description

Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

Scottish Water has an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated, flexible hard-working individual to join our Orkney Team within Customer Service Delivery as a Multifunctional Network Maintenance Operative.

You will join a motivated multifunctional team who are committed to making a real difference to the experience our customers have with us. This is not just a task driven role – you will be empowered to take ownership of problems, investigate them fully, initiate solutions and provide support to our customers.

The focus of the role will be to ensure the resolution of customer issues and the recovery of any reputational impact our operations have on customers.

What you’ll do

The role involves contributing to the maintenance of wastewater pumping stations and associated assets, including clearing choked pumps and carrying out routine maintenance on sewer and water network infrastructure. This includes completing excavations, repairs and maintenance on water mains, as well as maintaining water network assets such as service reservoirs and pumping stations.

You will be dealing with customers on a day‑to‑day basis, ensuring they are kept informed of work being carried out and that disruption to services is kept to a minimum. You will also work closely with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders as part of daily operations.

You will be responsible for completing all necessary reporting systems to support performance and productivity monitoring, while complying with all Scottish Water processes and policies, including safe systems of work, Chapter 8, NRSWA and relevant health and safety practices. The role also requires carrying out safety checks on small plant, equipment and vehicles.

What you’ll need

The role requires a full UK driving licence and the ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently as a lone worker.

Previous experience in a similar role would be desirable, along with knowledge of sewer and water networks and an understanding of health and safety requirements for site working, including HPJ and confined space activities. Additional qualifications such as an HGV licence, trailer towing, CPC or excavator qualification would be advantageous.

You should also have basic computer and report‑writing skills, along with practical abilities such as basic ground maintenance skills, to support day‑to‑day operational activities.

Looking out for you

While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.

This role requires a 1:5 standby. But you’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.

When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.

For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.

As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.

The not-so-small print

This role will be a Grade 4. If you’re new to Scottish Water, you’ll join us on a starting salary of £31,640. Performance-driven pay progression would then allow you to move through the range to a maximum of £36,460.

If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until the 21st April 2026 at midnight.

Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. Screening is conducted on our behalf by a third party, and must be completed before your start date. Don’t worry - we’ll only start these checks once you’ve accepted an offer.
