Overview
To deliver autonomous advanced level practice encompassing education, research and leadership, grounded in direct compassionate care provision or clinical work with patients, families and wider populations. The post holder’s practice should be developed to an advanced level, enabling influence on all aspects of care and management of patients in the systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT) pathway.
The post holder will support the development of training resources and participate in teaching to support all staff involved in delivering systemic anti-cancer treatment, including teaching and assessing for signs off administration of SACT. The role provides clinical specialist advice and support to patients, working alongside Consultant Oncologists, the chemotherapy nursing team, ACPs, pharmacy, the MDT and external partnerships. The post holder will lead on chemotherapy development and implementation of a high quality, safe and effective SACT service, and will plan and organise the service, advising Trust-wide where chemotherapy is delivered. The post holder is responsible for cytotoxic policy development and implementation and provides leadership and support to the chemotherapy service.
Key Duties
* Lead on chemotherapy development and implementation of high quality, safe and effective systemic anti-cancer therapy service.
* Deliver clinical leadership in developing chemotherapy services in collaboration with the chemotherapy ward manager and operational service lead.
* Promote cross-boundary, specialty-specific care pathways with the multidisciplinary team.
* Undertake nurse-led chemotherapy pre-assessment clinics, PICC line insertion procedures and toxicity follow-up clinics.
* Provide clinical review of patients, coordinate and manage transitions of care and support for patients and families across the chemotherapy treatment pathway.
* Strategically advise Trust-wide where chemotherapy is delivered and manage cytotoxic policy development and implementation.
* Develop and run clinical nurse specialist led clinics for patient assessment, treatment reviews and holistic assessment of care needs.
* Provide mentorship and assess SACT competence of staff.
* Deliver education and training programmes for healthcare professionals in the management of chemotherapy-related problems.
Service Development and Governance
* Develop standards of care and patient pathways reflecting cancer national guidance in collaboration with the Oncologists, ward manager, ACPs, and service leads.
* Improve waiting times and assessment-to-treatment processes; participate in incident reporting and risk mitigation.
* Lead development of chemotherapy service with a focus on continuous quality improvement through audits and patient feedback.
* Contribute to governance, audit and research activities; review chemotherapy protocols and guidelines for staff access.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
* Manage care of patients receiving chemotherapy in accordance with agreed guidelines and within the chemotherapy unit or nurse-led clinic.
* Provide information to support informed consent and patient choices; ensure information and support at key stages of the pathway, including signposting to support services as necessary.
* Coordinate care across the MDT, ensure timely investigations and attend to community and hospital-based pathways as required.
* Develop and run CNS-led clinics for patient assessment and treatment reviews; act as a resource for other disciplines seeking guidance on chemotherapy care.
* Ensure professional development and alignment to nationally agreed education and competency frameworks; maintain high-level communication within the Trust.
Leadership, Management and People
* Oversee budget management and resource allocation; lead policy development for chemotherapy services.
* Line management responsibility within the service; implement HR policies including IPR, absence, capability and disciplinary processes where relevant.
* Model best practice to empower staff and support high-quality, person-centred care; participate in personal and team appraisal and ensure effective workload management.
Governance, Audit and Research
* Critically appraise and apply findings from research, evaluations and audits to improve practice; ensure clinical risks are reported and managed appropriately.
* Develop and review chemotherapy protocols and guidelines; ensure accessibility to staff in clinical areas.
