Do you want to shine a light on the daily decisions of councils, ensure politicians keep their promises, and break essential stories about public interest issues?
We are looking for someone to join Leicestershire Live and its print counterpart the Leicester Mercury as a Local Democracy Reporter to live and breathe the decisions being made by politicians and institutions across Leicestershire.
This role is home‑based; however, to perform the duties you must be based in Leicestershire.

What will the role involve?
* Cover the key business of a variety of Leicestershire councils, including the political and social issues affecting their communities.
* Cover council meetings and key decisions in a timely manner.
* Build contacts, understand and explore the key issues, write features and break exclusives with potential for broadcast on the BBC Homepage and other local media partners.
Who are we looking for?
* An NCTJ or NQJ qualified journalist, ideally with 100 wpm shorthand skills (or currently working towards this), and an interest in local community issues.
* Previous experience reporting on local government/councils is desirable.
* A talent for pulling stories out of council meetings that our readers want to know about.
* Good knowledge of social media and how to use it to drive audience and engagement within the local area is an advantage.
* A passion for holding local councils and government to account and ensuring the community is heard.
* Expertise in all things Leicestershire with a solid understanding of the regions you will cover.
